growth on kidney

Spoke to adult ds 44 today who was in bits because he had been for a follow up appointment for an attack of kidney pain in the autumn. The kidney that had been hurting was fine but the scan had shown a growth on the other kidney.

Does anyone have any knowledge on what it could be as at the moment he is not sure if it is cancer and I want to help him as much as possible while he is waiting for his next scan as as you can imagine he is frightened as am I.

My ex-partner has a genetic condition called Von Hippel-Lindau disease. Many people who have it don't find out until later in life. I mention it because he has had growths on his kidneys as a result, and your son's consultant might want to rule it out. What scan did he have? N what scan is he waiting for?
I've just had ultrasound on my kidneys for blood in my urine.
It could be so many things, is your son a smoker, they say kidney cancer is rare under 50 xx

Thanks for your replies. Ds had an ultrasound scan after having had pain in his right kidney so they were checking for kidney stones and that scan discovered a growth on the left kidney. He has now had a ct scan having been injected with iodine to give more detail.

He had no symptoms of anything in his kidney and we hope that because it was picked early that if is cancer it is still in the early stages.
He now has to wait for the results of the scan.

He has never smoked but he is overweight but he is trying to lose weight now.
