Mirena Coil

Hi everyone, I’m looking for some advice. I had the mirena coil fitted 3 months ago and I’m still bleeding daily and I have really awful period pains, particularly when I lift things or do any exercise. I got the mirena fitted because after having the depo injection 3 times and coming off it I bled for a whole year straight and my doctor was hoping the mirena would stop it. Clearly it’s made things much worse for me though by adding this awful period pain into the mix. I have a high pain threshold but this pain literally brings tears to my eyes and I have to stop what I’m doing until it passes, as a waitress in a restaurant this is really inconvenient. Is this normal or should I be going back to my doctor? Has anyone experienced anything similar?

This amount of pain for 3 months is not normal; please go back to the doctor who inserted it.

You may need an scan to check the mirena is in the correct position.

If you were bleeding continuously for a year, I think you should have been referred to a gynaecologist for investigations to find out what was causing this. If the bleeding was caused by adenomyosis or fibroids, the uterus might be too bulky /large for a mirena to sit comfortably in it anyway.
