2nd mammogram due to calcification

Hi - hoping some of you have experience of this. I’ve been asked back for an urgent 2nd mammogram following “an area of calcifications that aren’t concerning but require repeat mammogram with magnification views to clarify”.

Anybody else had this??

Yes, I was called back 2 weeks ago. Had another mammogram, ultrasound scan and biopsy. Asked to go back this coming Tuesday for another biopsy.

@sugarplumfairy65 - that doesn't sound fun - fingers crossed everything works out fine for you, which I'm sure it will!

Do they do a biopsy on anyone who has another mammogram for calcification do you know? When invited back for the second, did they tell you they would be doing a biopsy and did they do it straight away or did you have to go back for another appointment?

It was all done during the same appointment. They also put a titanium marker in to see where they've been.
From the way they described it, they only do a biopsy if they dont get enough info from the scans.
I already have blood cancer and because of the chemo I've been having for that, I have a much higher chance of developing a secondary cancer.
I hope everything works out well for you x

I'll keep everything crossed for you - good luck

I'm in same position been back for ultrasound but inconclusive so back for biopsy next week.

Maybenext they only did another mammogram and ultrasound when I went back. It wasn't routine where I went.

Sugarplum - can I ask how was the biopsy I'm terrified of having it done and what it might show.

Last summer I, my sister and DDs MIL were all called back within a few weeks of each other. We were all terrified. Mine was a cyst, drained there and then. My sister's was nothing. DDs MIL did have cancer, she had a biopsy where they put in the marker, then another biopsy and then a further op where they took some more tissue away. Then a course of radiotherapy. She said that far and away the worse thing about it all was waiting each time. Hope all goes well for you. X

I have had a punch biopsy and as a pp said, it is not anything to worry about versus the waiting for results.

OP I know a couple of people called back for calcification. They like to get a good look at it and also images so they have a baseline. Fingers crossed that is all. I won’t say do not worry as I know that is near on impossible. But I wish you all the very best.

The first biopsy was fine. They put your breast in the mammogram machine (this was the most uncomfortable bit), inject you with local anaesthetic then it's a machine that does the biopsy. I didn't feel that bit at all. They had me sat in a wheelchair in front of the scanner with a nurse at the side of me talking and keeping me occupied. Apart from the slight sting as the anaesthetic went in, it was painless.
I was left with a pit of soreness and be using for a few days.

Yes same thing. After first squishing in the trailer I could tell by the radiographer's face she'd seen something. I was called to the hospital within two weeks.

Calcification looked like sharp specs of light on an otherwise dark and fuzzy image. The professionals were lovely and explained everything. The biopsy didn't hurt; not something I'd choose to do again because of the lack of autonomy (euphemism for piece of meat feeling) but they were doing their job well. No side effects or pain after and all forgotten next day.

I was given a return date for the outcome after the team had met to consider results but the consultant kept phoning before the appointment until we got through to each other. She was pleased to tell me over the phone that all was fine.

I got called back after my first mammogram and was told I had micro calcification. I had ultrasound and the doctor confirmed there and then that she was completely satisfied that nothing was amiss. I've had two more routine mammograms since then. I understand they just keep a watching brief to see for any changes.

Thanks everyone - it is good to hear that it isn’t that uncommon and most scenarios end up fine. It’s crazy how the brain focuses on worse case scenarios rather then absorbing the facts / statistics and not panicking!
