Optician found spots on visual field test.Been referred for further tests.Go is chasing them up as my dad had cancer in his brain and mum had stage 4 cancer too.
Today after some really stressful weeks I had zig zagging colours in my left eye.It was frightening and stopped after 5 minutes.
What should I expect at neuro opthamologists. What do they do?

I have just been today after an urgent referral from optician. It was hospital ‘eye casualty ‘ as opposed to neuro.

They did loads of tests & started off with numbing drops and drops to dilate my pupils. This bit lasted about 6 hours and I could barely see all day.

Sounds like occular migraines.

I get them but mine are only in black and white. I quite enjoy them in a weird way. But they aren’t dangerous l don’t think. I’ve seen my gp and she said they just sometimes start for no reason.

And l get them in either eye or sometimes in both. I think the correct name for both eyes is Scintilating Sarcoma. I kind of like this name in a weird way too.

Zig zags are likely to be optical migraine, but could also be an issue with the retina (or something else entirely) so I’d ring the eye hospital or optician and ask to be seen.

Thank you all.I am going for further tests as partial right sided sight loss is not normal. My friend has multiple sclerosis and was diagnosed via right side sight loss.I also have had dizzy spells and pains in my hands.I spoke to her she said wait and see. Thanks for your support.

Op as a PP has said you need to be seen by your optician urgently if these zig zags are new. It may just be a ocular migraine or something connected with the other eye, but it could easily be an unconnected problem with the retina.

GP said it was ocular migraine.....pretty.scary at the time though.Thank you all.

I think you mean scotoma. You really really would not want sarcoma in your eyes. Shock

I get the zigzag thing too. Usually lasts for about 15 minutes, followed by an annoying headache and giddiness afterwards. I was told mine was likely to be a visual migraine?

ChippyMinton · 01/02/2019 21:54

I had this once, and it freaked me out so went to GP, who advised it was a symptom of high blood pressure. Then it turned out that the high BP was actually a symptom of something else, for which I am now being treated. So I was glad to have had the zigzags as a warning.

whatisforteamum · 01/02/2019 23:49

My Dad had them once...it was his retina detaching.I was frightened as I say I am awaiting an appointment for my right eye at the hospital. The GP sounded almost.amused that I was concernedweeks
.Now I know what it is I won't be alarmed again.I have had a beyond stressful few weeks
