Painful mothguard

I have a new NHS mouth guard (lower soft splint). It’s really tight and rigid. I have to push down and firmly ‘lock it in’ vs just wearing it normally like my old mouth guard (which was made by my old dental practice.)

There’s a certain area of my gums that has become very sore and tender over the past 2 weeks. The pain is getting worse and the area is swollen. The edge of the mouth guard sort of rests on the gum so it’s just digs in. I’m stuck between wearing it and the area worsening, or not wearing it and not having the protection.

Is there anything I can buy or do to the mouth guard to help with the pain/friction? I have an appointment with my dentist next week.
