Period over a week long??

Hi everyone,

I'm quite worried at the moment as my periods are usually the same every month. They don't usually last more than 5 or 6 days, but I'm now on day 8 and the bleeding doesn't show any signs of stopping. I've also had a cold so for the past few days I've vomited a few times, had a fever, and I've been coughing a lot. Could this be affecting my period or do you think it's something else? Could this have been a really early miscarriage (not pregnant to my knowledge, but haven't tested)? It doesn't seem likely but I'm scared.

At what point do I go to the doctors?

OP just my view but I don’t think a cold can affect how long your periods last (stress can though sometimes).

I had periods that wouldn’t stop 2/3 times and ended up getting tablets to help - primolut (norethistetone). I did wait for about a month before going to the GP the last time - had lots of clots etc. I never knew why - just a menstrual disorder really.

If you are of menopausal age that could be a reason for longer periods. Perhaps give it another week and see if it stops?

Every so often (I think the stats are about once yearly) most women have an anovulatory cycle - these tend to be heavier and longer.
Completely normal and if it is a one off I'd not worry any more.
If it's not stopping or becoming a regular thing go to see your GP.

I've had a few 8 day ones. Bastards aren't they?! Then they stop suddenly, no tailing off of bleeding. Weird. I'm 42, 3 children, breastfeeding, severe endometriosis and IBS. My also stop for 24-36 hours midway. Bizarre things, bodies.

I wouldn't worry unless it is especially heavy, painful, or goes on longer than 10 days. But if you are worried then no harm seeing your GP especially if you're feeling poorly too.

Hope you feel better soon Thanks
