Smear, abnormal cells with HPV

I received my smear results by post on friday and the letter says I have low grade abnormal cells and also have a HPV infection, I received a letter the next day saying I had a colposcopy appointment for the 31st January.

I'm trying not to worry too much but I have been feeling really unwell and absolutely exhausted lately, I have unexplained diarrhoea nearly everyday, and loads of slimy vaginal discharge (sorry for tmi) I have had pain when having sex but no bleeding so don't know if any of these symptoms could actually be linked to cervical cancer.

Just wondering if anyone has had similar smear result/symptoms and what the outcome was?

I had same results an outcome was they couldn’t find anything wrong at colcoscopy and I went back to regular screening regime. My next smear came back completely clear including no HPV.

I had exactly the same too, colposcopy did show a few inflamed cells but no further treatment.

I had yearly smears afterwards and no HPV and so after three - I'm back to every three yearly cycles.

I suggest you see your GP about your symptoms as it's not possible to tell whether they have anything to do with the cervical screening result.
The GP can then start any appropriate investigations e.g. doing swabs and a stool sample to rule out infection. Did you mention these symptoms when you went for the smear test?
The Jo's trust forum has a good support and the BSCCP has useful information about test results.

@BelaLug0si the only symptom I mentioned at my smear was the discharge which the nurse commented on herself as there is quite a lot and I bled when she was doing the smear too.

I was sent for a smear due to having recurrent thrush, they took a high vaginal swab and also tested for chlamydia at the same time as my smear but they were both ok. I've mentioned all my other symptoms to my GP who's run loads of blood tests but can't find anything wrong. Just want to start feeling better now 😣

I've had abnormal cells twice, had 2 colposcopies involving 2 loop biopsies and a punch biopsy, nothing further found every time. I also have HPV. Try not to worry, the great thing about regular testing is that things tend to get picked up on before they get too bad, good luck!

Had this recently, exactly the same scenario of low grade with HPV positive. Had a punch biopsy during my colposcopy, no issues and back to 3 yearly smears.

I had exactly the same as you. Low grade cervical cell changes and HPV. I had a colposcopy but everything was fine! Obviously all cases can be different but just a positive take on it here. I was meant to have yearly smears after it but when they studied the cells they had taken more they decided that actually three yearly was enough.

There are quite a few possible causes for your symptoms and could be more than one thing.
Keep going back to your GP, and ask them what they've ruled out so far.
The majority of women referred with low grade dyskaryosis, hrHPV positive are fine at colposcopy but you still need to go to be checked out for that too.

Thank you, your posts have made me feel a bit better
