Hi, Im really struggling with getting a full nights sleep. I have started a new job and its all overwhelming trying to balance work and home (im still carrying the mental load). My brain is racing so I struggle to sleep and then will wake up constantly at night.
Anyway, do tablets like nytol work? Im already using a meditation app and Im taking anti-depressants so I wouldnt be able to take anything that interferes with that. I can tell that I'll be like this for a few months and i dont want to go to the doctors to get prescription sleeping tablet.
P.S. Im starting to sort out the mental load aspect. thanks

Put your iPad /phone /pc/laptop etc away 2 hours before bed ! And have a sleep screen fitted to your bedroom tv if you have one in there or fit a sleep screen to your kindle if you use one . My gadgets are going away in 10 mins ! I won't look at them again until tomorrow morning . It has helped me enormously.
Good luck !

Rather than looking at the screen could you get in to a podcast series or something? Spend an hour in your bedroom relaxing etc and listening to podcast or music before bed? Or audio book?

You could read too, I don't really like reading :) you can close your eyes with audio stuff and get more relaxed I think!

Holy Basil capsules have helped me for the past 3years get a proper nights sleep.
Also I have a warm milk drink and couple of biscuits because the stress hormones can play havoc with blood sugar dropping and making you jump awake many times during the night.

Please Don’t take anything without checking whether it will interact negatively with your anti depressants. A surprising amount of herbal stuff can do this.

OP Headspace sleepcast and sleepsounds have changed the game for me
I was also recommended by medical professionals and therapist the following
No alcohol
No coffee after 2pm
healthy snack before bed like banana or warm milk
Exercise, run, brisk walk
And then I use the headspace to fall asleep and when I wake up in the night

Good luck

planespotting · 13/01/2019 08:06

No sugary stuff before bed though! Will raise blood sugar then down and you will wake up craving more

Thank you everyone, its horrible not being able to sleep when you are desperate for it

I’m an ex teacher and I used to take herbal nytol on the last Sunday night of the holidays. After 20mins I would be drooling and would quickly fall asleep. But it’s not something I would want to take more than a few time a year.

Try writing down all your ideas, worries and to do list before you leave work.

Deep muscle relaxation is good. There are free videos on YouTube.

That so for the update @wizzywig I am glad you are sleeping better!
