Gallstones? If not what else can it be?

Over Xmas I had a few days of awful stomach and back pain. It was centred over my middle under my ribs but radiated out to the left. I feel nauseous, had no appetite and felt bloated and full of wind, burping constantly. I couldn’t sleep at night, laying down made it worse and my whole ebdomen felt sore and upset.

I visited the OOH GP and was given omeprazole and told to take painkillers along with those, he thought it was a stomach issue. It did settle somewhat but I haven had much appetite at all. Day before yesterday I was woken in the night again by awful abdominal and back pain. I felt like something clenching inside me, felt sick and a little breathless. I did wonder if it was a heart attack.

I went to the GP as soon as I got up as by now the pain had settled under my right ribs. Again the burping and loss of appetite started, the pain wasn’t excruciating but a moderate, constant dull niggling ache.

GP took bloods and booked me in for an ultrasound saying he thought maybe gallstones. He prodded about a bit and pushed while I held my breath - this was all feeling sore but it wasn’t unbearable. Again, since then I have this constant dull ache under my ribs on the right. Full of wind, burping constantly.

Bloods have come back clear today, I was checked for AFP, Amylase, H Pylori and CA125. I’m pleased they are clear but still haven’t had answers. I’m at a loss as to what this is and I’m hoping it’s not something that’s going to remain unresolved.

Does it sound like gallstones? I’m not having the dreadful collapsing pain I usually hear about with gallstones so I’m baffled. Any ideas please?

You can have gallbladder problems without having stones. I did. My gallbladder functionality was down to 8% and that's why I had all of the problems I did. It's been removed and I'm completely back to normal. You may need to have a functionality test if you don't have any stones.

I’ve had something similar since Christmas Day, started as dull cramping on n off, gradually got worse until it was really bloody painful, couldn’t sleep, and strangely it eased off when I ate something. After 3 days, the cramping had stopped but was left with a really tender abdomen for 2 days. Came back again this Monday, but have been yesterday and today. No other issues, no d&v, no wind.

Dr Google tells me gallstones.

Coeliac disease perhaps?
