In the last few weeks mum has been loosing weight. Nearly a stone. We finally got a doctors appointment on Monday, where he was quite concerned about this loss. He has sent her for an chest x-ray and a full blood count. She had the x-ray on Monday and has received a call to go to see him tomorrow. We thought it could take up to 10 days for the results.
Mum is now very worried that she has cancer.
Last year she had problems with her bowels had the camera etc and all was well. I'm trying to be positive.
Has anyone else had this and it be ok in the end. She's 83 and still has a good appetite.

Is she underweight?

My mother had unexplained weight loss. She didn't have cancer. What a load of pointless worry. She promptly died of a heart attack instead.

abbsisspartacus · 09/01/2019 22:35

Thyroid issues?

Burlea · 09/01/2019 23:16

Not been told about the bloods, the receptionist only said the doctor wants to discuss the x-ray. She has never been a big lady usually 8 and half stone. Now she is 7st 5lb.
Appetite is the same. Her memory is slowing down.
Thanks for your replies.

Did she smoke? Wondering why the GP ordered the lung x-ray?

DianaT1969 · 09/01/2019 23:33

My mum had lung cancer. It was after a COPD diagnosis and a shadow on the lung which required a biopsy to confirm.
I know it's impossible not to worry, but try to stay positive until the GP appointment. In the unfortunate event that it is serious, there are some very good, life-prolonging treatments nowadays.

Diabetes? FIL has dramatic weight loss in a week and it was due to extremely high blood sugars, which makes your body burn fat or something

Burlea · 09/01/2019 23:37

She has never smoked or drink. I don't know why she has had a chest x-ray but my dad died of asbestosis (don't know the proper name) nearly 20 years ago. It's silly but mum has it in her head that's what she has got.

Update after seeing the doctor. Unfortunately mum has cancer in her lungs. She is having a full scan next week to see if or where it's spread too.
She's had no pain or breathing problems.
We are in shock.
