Dental crown - how many appointments?

I have a tooth that has broken after having a root canal done on it about 10 years ago. I've just started going to my parents' NHS dentist who says he can crown it in 2 appointments. However, my brother-in-law's a dentist - albeit in Italy - and he says a proper crown is done in around 4 appointments and anything less than that won't last. (He's been doing my teeth for the last few years but I can't afford to keep going to see him, much less for 4 separate appointments!)

I'm really not sure what to do - can anyone who's had a crown put in in England tell me how long it took to do and which type of crown you had? That's another whole can of worms as NHS dentist says he strongly doesn't recommend an NHS crown but instead would put in a zirconium crown which is pricier but longer-lasting (apparently!)

Any words of wisdom gratefully received! Thanks Grin

I have one booked over 2 appointments. One for the moulding, one for the fitting.

I first had an NHS one done and ended up going 4 times because it was terribly made and fitted and kept falling out. Had one done privately across two appointments. Not a problem with it since (5 years ago).

I’m getting three but only because there wasn’t time to do the mold in the first. One to shape the tooth (or what’s left of it), one for the mold, then one for the fitting. Not really clear what you'd use a fourth appointment for other than maybe checking it was still ok?

I had a crown done privately over two appointments - the fitting was a long one, 45 minutes at least.

It's fine so far.

Only time one's taken more than 2 appointments was an nhs dentist where the fitting kept being wrong.

I have 3 crowns, done in 3 countries - one metal (uk, when I was about 18), Singapore (ceramic, 20 something) and Malta (3D printed ceramic, 40 something)

In fact the latest one in Malta could have been done in 1 appointment, with a 30 minute break for them to print it!

I have no idea why they could take 4 appointments.

Two private crowns.
One done in 3 appointments.
One done in 4 appointments.
I think they were £500 and £525.
No problems with either of them.
5 year guarantee!
