Swollen right tonsil and ear feels blocked

KittyKat885 · 08/01/2019 01:23

My right tonsil is visibly swollen and my ear feels blocked, but neither the troat or ear are painful. It has been like this for 3 weeks now. Two rounds of antibiotics and still no change.
My doctor said its a viral thing and will go away on its own. But my health anxiety is diving me crazy and I'm worried it's something more serious.
Has anyone experienced anything similar?

It has been like this for 3 weeks now.
I would ask for a referral to an Ear, Nose & Throat specialist just to be safe.

KittyKat885 · 08/01/2019 08:54

Got a doctors appointment today. This will be the 4th one regarding this issue. Will ask to be referred to ENT.

GPS don't usually refer to ENT until 12 weeks as most issues resolve in that time. But may be worth trying antibiotic ear drops?

ShadyLady53 · 08/01/2019 14:13

Similar but other symptoms too. I’ve just had a blood test as they now suspect glandular fever. Was initially told it was viral too. Glandular fever doesn’t respond to antibiotics. Any other symptoms?

Peaspleaselouise · 08/01/2019 16:14

If it's viral then antibiotics won't make a jot of difference?

ENT referral seems excessive for what is most probably a virus that will resolve.

Flossie44 · 08/01/2019 17:27

Wow I came on here as I have the same!! Although I haven’t got tonsils, the area where tonsils are is feeling swollen!! And my ear is full. my neck hurts almost as if there’s an infected gland there. I had an ear infection beginning of December, it resolved but came back!!
Please let me know how you got on at the doctors. I too have horrific health anxiety and have convinced myself it’s something sinister!!

MrsGxx · 08/01/2019 19:19

I’ve had this since October along with headaches
My ears feel full, my right side has been swollen but nothing to warrant antibiotics, I was referred to ent which fount nothing, & also a neck mri which also was clear. It seems to be a lingering virus and mine still hasn’t gone and I’m suffering.

LibertyHill · 08/01/2019 19:44

Interesting, I have the same thing on the left side. Ear is slightly swollen inside, left side of my throat is swollen and I have a gum infection on the left side too.

Flossie44 · 08/01/2019 19:46

Wow. Wonder if it’s a common virus.....

MrsGxx · 08/01/2019 21:52

I think it just might be, seems a few people with same/smililar symptoms. My ears are also sore and feel hot and inflamed but it’s not visible x

Flossie44 · 09/01/2019 14:07

Sat in doctors waiting room to see what she thinks. Hate coming to the doctors. Will let you know

MrsGxx · 09/01/2019 14:32

Yes keep us updated xx

Flossie44 · 09/01/2019 15:05

Ahhhhh......muscle tension and rock solid muscles in spasm !!!!!!

MrsGxx · 09/01/2019 17:45

Is that was it’s said to be?

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 09/01/2019 17:57

Impacted tonsil stones?

Flossie44 · 09/01/2019 18:21

She just said the muscles in that side of my neck are in spasm. They do feel like that. And they can affect the way the ear feels. My ear doesn’t hurt, it just feels strange. And I have got pain going down from neck to shoulder

KittyKat885 · 13/01/2019 22:25

Liturally no other symptoms. Just a blocked feeling in my ear and visibly swollen tonsil. Had my glands felt and doctor said they were fine...
Throat feels slightly scratchy some days and other days feels totally find but is still visibly swollen.
How long have you had these symptoms?

OP posts:
GreatDuckCookery6211 · 13/01/2019 22:27

Do you have tonsil stones OP? Sometimes they can make the tonsil swell because they are stuck inside. How much bigger is it than the other one?

KittyKat885 · 13/01/2019 22:31

Thanks everyone for your replies! It's very very reassuring to hear I'm not alone with these symptoms.
Doctor felt my glands and said all seemed totally fine. Looked in my ear and said there were 3 bubbles...?!? But that otherwise it looked fine.
Still no change in the tonsil, still swollen and relatively painless. No spots or pus on the tonsil. Just swollen.
I suspected tonsil stones but I can't see anything on the tonsil.
Doctors don't seem at all concerned and almost laughed me out of there when I mentioned seeing a specialist.
My shoulders and neck feel tense, but I think that's due to my health anxiety causing me to feel tense and stressed.

Can a viral infection really cause one swollen tonsil and blocked ear feeling and no other symptoms?? I don't feel ill, I don't look ill, I'm not in pain. Does it sound viral?

WhoWants2Know · 13/01/2019 22:34

Have you been gargling with salt water to try to reduce the inflammation?

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 13/01/2019 22:38

I'm not a doctor so can't say whether a virus would cause one tonsil to swell and not the other but personally I would be looking for a second opinion, you've had AB which haven't made any difference and it's been over 3 weeks now so should be going down in size by now I would have thought.

How much bigger is it to the other one? A lot or just a bit?

KittyKat885 · 13/01/2019 22:46

The left tonsil is totally flat and the right tonsil looks like a kidney bean :(
I haven't gargled with any salt water. I will try that tonight.
I'm just a nervous wreck thinking the worse.
I've seen 3 different doctors (2 locum doctors) and all three have told me not to worry BUT no one can say for sure or even give any indication of what it is other than viral....

I'm sorry I don't know how to reply to a particular comment/person on here... I clicked reply on your response but it doesn't tag your name in my replies...

Try the saltwater gargle, keep doing throughout the day for the next week, don't check your mouth till next Sunday, if it's still the same go back to your GP.

Try and take your mind of it, hard I know Flowers

MrsGxx · 13/01/2019 22:51

Doctors tend to push things off as viral if they can’t see nothing else wrong, ie infection.
I’ve been back and forth since October with just my right side swollen but also no spots or anything to warrant infection/antibiotics and it still hasn’t gone down. I was referred to ENT and all was clear, who also did an MRI and was clear. Maybe try and see a different doctor if you are concerned but try gargling with salt water and mouthwash 💐
