Has anyone had a bone scan?

FIL getting a bone scan done this week

He has been in hospital poorly for months. Said he has been told what is wrong with him but isn’t telling anyone until he has his bone scan so he knows exactly what’s wrong with him

I know I shouldn’t have googled, but I did. And it said a bone scan is to check if cancer has spread to bones Sad

is there anyone who has had a bone scan for anything else??

there’s more than 1 type of bone scan and lots of things other than cancer they could be looking for. Hope it goes ok.

I had a bone scan to determine my bone density prior to being put on a hormone drug (post breast cancer). I had a PET scan to determine if the cancer has spread.

Really, it could be anthingt, but I understand why you are worried

Thank you for the replies..

I totally understand why he doesn’t want to tell anyone until he knows 100% what is wrong with him but he told me that it’s not good news so it’s just made me very worried.

I had a bone scan to check to see how deep into my bone an infection went and also if spread to any other bones!

avoschmado · 07/01/2019 20:35

Could be determine bone age if osteoporosis or similar.

hshavshejwhg12 · 07/01/2019 20:38

Well.. he had an infection in his foot where he spent 6 weeks in hospital on an IV drip 4 times a day. He then got let out... got poorly again and when they took him back in a few weeks ago they said his problem now is nothing to do with the infection in his foot anymore. So I wonder if the infection has maybe spread? He does get a lot of pain in his legs.

if he is unwell in hospital then a ct scan to look if a cancer has spread is likely
Sad sorry op.
hopefully it isn't and/or hasn't spread. fingers crossed

There was also consultants from our local hospital and a bigger hospital 2 hours away having a meeting about his case

He has had a CT scan and they have told him the results whatever they may be... and now he is waiting for his bone scan. I’m not sure if CT scans show infections too, I really don’t have a lot of medical knowledge!

I had a bone scan to check bone density and rule out (or in I suppose, but it ended up being ruled out) osteoporosis. My grandad had Paget's disease of the bone and had a few bone scans for the initial diagnosis and then to track the progression of the disease.
You must be very worried, but there are so many reasons people have bone scans that speculating about it will only make you more anxious without providing you any real information. Difficult to switch your mind off though, I know. Can you focus your nervous energy into something practical that would show your FIL you care? A photo album of happy memories to look through while he's in hospital or similar?

greenelephantscarf · 07/01/2019 20:42

yes a ct scan would show an inflammation/infection of the bone.

hshavshejwhg12 · 07/01/2019 20:50

Thanks everyone. I’m really hoping it’s not as bad as what I’m expecting. If it was the C word everyone in the family would be so upset.

I’m really close to my FIL and would do anything for him. I’m the one driving him to his scan this week.

Fingers crossed it is something not serious and treatable Smile
