I’ve been coughing for 7 years now & it’s getting me down, been to several different hospitals for this & had numerous tests, scans, xrays, bronchoscopy, & medications but to no avail, all are saying everything is normal. I’m still coughing, it has ruined my last 10 years of living with all the complications that go along with it eg. not to mention, stress in continence, not being able to talk to people or phone, dining out, going to cinema, etc etc. Am at my wits end, HELP!!

Coughing can be caused by reflux, I don’t know if that has been considered.

My mom has had a chronic cough for years and all tests/X-rays came back clear. The GP suggested reflux to her a few weeks ago and commenced her on Omeprazole which she has to trial for a month.

Allergies??

There are now a few specialist cough clinics around now which is probably what you need. Can you say what part of the country you're in? I might be able to point you in the right direction.

Watching this thread. Sorry to hear about your cough OP, sounds awful. My poor Mum has had a cough for over 10 years now. She has a nasal drip (sinus problems) and silent reflux caused by a hernia. The hernia isn't bad enough to operate (or they don't operate on them anymore, something along those lines). She has tried various tablets but nothing has helped. She has recently been given an inhaler to try...also hasn't helped. She is absolutely at her wits end and it has really impacted her life.
I hope you get the help you need.

What sort of sensation is it? A tickling at the back of your throat?

pickledparsnip · 05/01/2019 10:27

I think my Mum is going to go down the holistic path next, as conventional medicine hasn't helped. The doctors just seem to think she should put up with it.

Coughing without acid related reflux can be silent reflux. If you’ve got full tick of health from respiratory id ask for a consultant referral to GI Physiology for 24 hour impedance testing. They will do oesophageal manometry as standard for this too. There’s a department at Sheffield too. Good luck

Hi I’ve had the procedure done in Sheffield hospital for the impedance 24 hr monitoring, I was told there was no more they could do & refered me to a psychological therapist as this cough started at the same time as my daughter in law died. I’ve had the therapy but it’s not helped at all. I don’t know where to turn next as I’m that desperate.
