Tonsilitus. How many drugs to take?

I'm maxed out on paracetamol. I have taken some Nurofen, I have spayed my throat with anaesthetic.
I still feel ghastly, can't speak, sleep or swallow.
If I gargle dispersable aspirin, on top of that cocktail...do I drink the aspirin after gargling or spit?
I can't phone the NHS hotline to ask them as I can't speak.

What did the doctor who diagnosed you suggest?

TheBabyAteMyBrain · 29/12/2018 12:02

111 has an online service you could use to ask for guidance.

I haven't bothered the doctor yet. I get tonsilitus roughly every two years so I thought I could ride this out, as o have done before...but it's beating me. So until my husband gets home and he can phone the NHS hotline, please can someone advise!

My doc said not to take aspirin alongside ibuprofen. She recommended gargling aspirin and then swallowing it so couldn't take ibuprofen too.

I had a horrendous throat infection a few weeks before Xmas and ended up on the soluble 30/500 Cocodamol tablets teamed up with aspirin and chloroseptic spray. It was awful. Hope you're feeling better soon. Flowers

If you can't swallow, you need to be seen ASAP.

It could be developing into quinsy which is a serious medical situation and needs intervention urgently.

Can you drive? Can you get him to come home sooner?

TSSDNCOP · 29/12/2018 12:08

Yep. Push Doctor (I don’t work for them) you’ll have a prescription in an hour. Pricey but soooooo worth it.

Polyethyl · 29/12/2018 12:14

Ok thank you
I'll gargle and drink the aspirin and phone the out of hours doctor when husband returns from the park.
He took our daughter out to give me some peace from her babbling.

If it's tonsillitis, painkillers alone won't help, particularly if you're feeling awful. This would be one of the rare occasions I'd be asking for antibiotics.

abbsisspartacus · 29/12/2018 12:17

Gargle salt water

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 29/12/2018 12:17

If it's bacterial tonsillitis you need the old penicillin.

Jent13c · 29/12/2018 12:24

Tyrozets for local pain, then paracetamol every 4 hours, ibuprofen in between when required. Try and keep fluids up as much as possible, try hot drinks/cold drinks but probably more juice based than milky based. The only thing I can take when I have it is rice pudding with magic stars melted in.
