Sinisitus/post nasal drip

I've had sinus issues on and off for a few years but the last few months my occasional post nasal drip has turned into constant swallowing and coughing, especially bad at night. One nostril is pretty blocked and I'm going through a lot of tissues with the mucus (eww). I keep waking in the middle of the night either needing to blow my nose because I can't breathe properly or coughing/choking on all the crap in my throat.

I've made an appointment with the doctor but it's not for a couple of weeks. In the meantime I'm coughing like I smoke 50 a day, can feel it in my chest a bit too. Is there anything I can use that gives relief? I've never tried a neti pot and am too scared too but if there's anything that would help with the post nasal drip/cough that would be good - thanks for any recs.

My ent doctor recommended sterimar which you can get from any pharmacy/boots. It's a saline spray and much easier to use than a neti pot. It usually provides me more relief than steroid sprays. Have you tried to look up your nose to see if you possibly have nasal polyps?

I second Sterimar, which I have only just discovered this winter but has helped a lot with my (very similar) symptoms.

Thanks Einszwei, I've been using Sterimar a bit and it helps when I'm feeling blocked. I was wondering about polyps. I've not tried looking up my nose for them, is that easy to do lol.

I had a sinus infections while ago, phone the doctors and the receptionist told me go to the chemist and the will give me something but they said the couldn't. They told me to phone doctors on call, I got an appointment that day and got antibiotics. They didn't work and I had to go to the doctors but maybe a trip to your doctors on call would be a good idea.

I'll see if it gets any worse and maybe do that. The cough is annoying and it's been like this for ages, people keep thinking I've got the cold but I don't.

Have you considered the cause could be lpr. This can cause chronic cough and mucus.

LongDecember · 28/12/2018 14:15

Had to google LPR. I don't feel like I've got something stuck in my throat though so maybe it's not that. Just swallowing often as I feel runny snot trickling down my throat (tmi I know).

Neilmed sinus rinse. Much cheaper than Sterimar and you can use warm water with it (always boil water before using it to make sure there are no nasties lurking!) Which I find helps to loosen the phlegm and help it to flush out. The rinse bottles are very easy to use (never used a neti pot myself but I image this is a lot easier) - you can get them from Boots.

Nasonex spray is the only thing that works for me .I always had to take antibiotics for infections but this stops it before it develops into an infection .Only on prescription.

@LongDecember or anyone else! Did you find the Sterimar (or similar) helped with the cough before I go purchase some... My post nasal drip cough is driving me insane 😵

LarkDescending · 30/12/2018 17:40

The Sterimar definitely does help me with the cough, because it helps clear some of the gunk out. I also gargle with Dentyl mouthwash for the same reason. It all helps.
