I apologise in advance for this long post..

My FIL has been very poorly for a while now. Back in March he broke his foot, and because he continued to walk on it he made it worse and then had to wear a big boot.. this gave him sciatica as he was walking oddly with the height of the boot so was then given another boot for his other foot (I’m sorry confusing!)

Around 3 months ago he just started feeling very poorly and he still is, he has been in and out of hospital and went back in today. He has been diagnosed with Rigors and every night he has to change his tshirt hourly as it is soaked with sweat. This only happens through the night and not through the day. He feels fluey, has days where he is constantly sick and days he’s not sick at all. They said that one of the boots he was wearing on his foot gave him an ulcer, which became infected (he was then on IV antibiotics for 6 weeks)... further investigation found he had a dead bone in his foot which they still haven’t told him what is happening with it and this was around 6 weeks ago. He is back in hospital as he said had such a horrendous weekend with his whole body being in agony. An opthopedic surgeon said today his foot looks great and that the doctors he previously had have been digging in the wrong holes and there is something else wrong with him. We are petrified. He has had a horrendous year, he lost his brother to cancer a few months ago. Does anyone have any advice or help that we could suggest to nurses/doctors? He just seems to be getting worse

I don't have any help to offer sorry but might be worth contacting the Secretary of his consultant (You can normally get through via switchboard) and asking for a meeting to be arranged with your fil and the dr (and yourself) to discuss his plan of care. Might take a bit of time to arrange but sounds like what he needs is someone to sit and review everythj g and try and come to a diagnosis/plan for further investigation. You could also try and get a gp appointment for them to do similar and discuss what's happened so far and what the plan is going forward in terms of getting a diagnosis.

In the mean time might be worth keeping a basic diary of symptoms. If he's feeling fluey/sweating get him to check his temperature and note down what it is along with any other symptoms. Hope you get somewhere soon.

Iwillruniwillfly - thank you for your reply. He doesn’t really have a consultant, he has different doctors seeing him all the time and then he gets shifted wards or put home

He is diabetic though and he has a diabetic doctor so I could get on the case with her and see if she can help things at all.

Thanks again for your reply
