Horrible virus that won't go away

I'm so bored and frustrated with this nasty virus that I've now had for 5 weeks. I don't seem to be getting better.

It started as tonsilitis, with cold/flu symptoms. The sore throat and cough have pretty much cleared up now but I am going through every other thing, sinus pain, ear pain, swollen glands... I'm feeling really dizzy and weak, with shivery spells and hot flushes, but no temperature to report. All I can do is sit in bed or in front of the tv. If I sit completely still and take painkillers I feel kind of ok. If I stand up I feel dizzy and nauseous.

I have seen the doctor twice, she sent me for blood tests but thinks it is something viral, and said they are seeing a lot of people with long-lasting viruses at the moment. Apparently it can make you feel rotten for weeks.

I feel like I'm being fobbed off and that maybe I have a secondary infection now and need antibiotics but they don't want to give them.

Has anyone had this virus and recovered, rather than died of the terrible complications that google is telling me of?! Please give me hope!

Think I have had something similar but since mid August!
Mine started feeling sick and dirreah and light headed for a few weeks, and then along came Tonsilitis, 10 days of antibiotics, then followed a secondary throat infection which I’m still suffering from mid October with my throat. Sent me to ENT who’s didn’t find anything & also did an MRI.
Headaches, slight ear pain and major fatigue. I think they may be going along the lines of viral, but now my GP has sent me to endocrinologist for hormone testing as they cannot find anything and if all comes back ok with that which isn’t until jan 4th, I think they’ll put it all down to viral. 😫😔

MrsGxx · 15/12/2018 20:48

I’ve also had bloods etc.
Have you been checked for glandular fever?

ginandnappies · 15/12/2018 21:03

I'm the exact same although I only started symptoms 2 weeks ago. It's hell. I'm so exhausted and can't even concentrate half the time. My throat is finally feeling normal but my ears and sinuses are causing havoc! I feel for you :(

Vicious2018 · 15/12/2018 21:14

I just had a cold that was worse than before. Usually I am ok after taking paracetamol but this time I felt still too ill to do anything. I lasted six days but I am ok now. Many acquaintances have had the same.

Pandamodium · 15/12/2018 21:30

DD has had similar we are on week 5 I think. I did take her to the GP on week 3 as it wasn't buggering off and his theory was that she had got reinfected at school.

Hope it clears off soon for you.

I've got a virus at the moment which sounds a lot like yours. Been about 3 weeks and I had to start a course of doxycycline yesterday because of the lower respiratory symptoms. I've had aches and pains, headache and toothache, runny nose, hacking cough (very productive but really dry-sounding and sore). Awful fatigue, occasional dizziness, a bit of fever but no temperature as such. I'm hating it, has made me feel quite tearful at times and like you I'm not managing to do much other than sit or lie around most of the day. On the other hand, I get windows of energy and motivation to get a bit done round the house, or go out to the shops, but then am exhausted and low again. Tonnes of phlegm (sorry, I know, TMI) had the sweats at night for a few days but that's better now. Doxycycline kicking in I think but that can be grim in its own right! Still, my chest wasn't clearing up so I definitely needed it. Appetite wasn't great at times too.

I'm so fed up with fucking viruses, why are there so many these days?! Not a helpful question sorry, but life never used to be this horrid.

Fingers crossed your symptoms are going to disappear very soon. If your cough and sore throat hasn't lingered I think that's a good sign Flowers

katseyes7 · 15/12/2018 22:03

l've had this since October, mainly horrendous vertigo and nausea. Saw a GP then who said my 'eardrums were bulging' and it was down to a virus. Prescribed me Stemetil.
The dizziness and nausea have calmed down on their own but l've had a cough for weeks, muscle pain, headaches, weird feeling of pressure in my ears. l saw another GP yesterday, apparently my ears are 'still full' but because it's a virus there's nothing they can give you for it.
There's no sign of it going any time soon. l've been explaining to the job agency l'm going to that l can't drive because of the vertigo, if l take the tablets for it, they make me sleepy, ergo l can't drive. And l can't get the bus because of the nausea. l'm sure they think l'm bluffing, but l'm genuinely not. l'm getting a bit tired of it now.

It seems there’s a lot of this going around.
Awful ‘viral’ that won’t go away. I’ve suffered since mid August. I’ve not really been able to go out... only had enough energy for light house work, I haven’t been able to go shopping DH has had to do it all, or I’ve done an online shop. Poor DS is only 5 and has had to deal with me being in bed most of the time. Or only out for the toilet/bath or a little cleaning/washing. Breaking my heart just lately. Christmas around the corner and I’m just not feeling it 😫

biscuitbadger · 17/12/2018 08:50

Sorry to hear others are suffering similar. Mrs G how awful to be ill since August!

I'm still hoping someone will come on and tell us of their full recovery...

I had blood tests a few days ago, so still waiting for results. The doctor didn't think it was glandular fever as I didn't tick enough of the boxes when I saw her. But it's such an odd virus, it seems the symptoms keep shifting. As one thing improves, something else starts hurting. There was even a week when I felt much better and went back to work, and then I suddenly felt rough again.

I've done all the Christmas shopping and planning from my bed, it's the only thing I can do to feel useful at the moment!

It’s been the worst time. Yes every time something gets better, something else comes along it’s never ending. I’ve sure had enough. I’ve had allsorts of tests. Bloods that came back fine, then they ticked of some more bloods that also came back fine just low vit D which he’s now given me supplements for, my throats felt like I’ve had Tonsilitis since mid October but with no pain and I had 10 days antibiotics at first as he did say there was an infection, now it’s still got the same feeling, glands are all up on my right side, it’s swollen and red but no sign of infection to warrant antibiotics 😤 the feeling is awful.
Being in bed so long I’ve actjally developed blood clots so I’m also now on blood thinners, I’ve had a chest X-ray, camera down my throat, MRI on my neck because of my throat, all came back clear. I’ve been sent to endocrinologist My body’s obviously fighting something it’s just what. I’ve also done Christmas shopping and organising from my bed I hope we both get answers soon or is it really just a virus😒

biscuitbadger · 19/12/2018 17:06

How's everyone doing?

I am now down to sinus/ear pressure, loads of gunk coming down the back of my throat, glands in my neck are up, just so weak and wobbly... on a positive note I felt a little better today than I have been, managed to sit at the kitchen table and make some Christmas cards without feeling like I would pass out.

I've just seen the GP again, my blood tests came back fine. She thinks it sounds like it could be a secondary bacterial infection so I am now starting a course of antibiotics. Really, really hoping that will shift it.

The doctor said if the antibiotics don't work, and it's still dragging on, then to come back and see her, and they'd think about whether it's post-viral fatigue/CFS.

It's interesting how each GP seems to have a different approach to these things isn't it.

Had mine since mid-November. It's on it the way out now though. Last day of doxycycline tomorrow (horrible drug) but at least I am finally headache free, sinus pain free and the gunk at the back of my throat is almost gone too. A couple of days on doxy taking as directed was absolutely horrendous. Did some research and found out that it might be better to take after/with food. This was much better. One more day ....

PeachRose · 17/01/2019 20:51

Hello, I've been prescribed Doxycycline for a chest infection that amoxicillin won't shift. How long before the tablets kick in? I know everyone is different but I'm still feeling crap and I feel as though these antibiotics have given me more headaches and loss of hearing on one side. Did either of you suffer from side effects?

I'm on day two of s seven day course. First day took 2 tablets then one a day.

goose1964 · 17/01/2019 21:22

My son has labrynthitis, feeling dizzy and nauseous, and the rules for coping are plenty of liquids and lie on your side when it's really bad. Hope this helps some of you

JinglingHellsBells · 08/03/2019 16:19

Just resurrecting this.

I had a flu like virus 5-6 weeks ago- was in bed for nearly 3 days feeling aches, pains, really sore nasal passages (have had flu jab in Sept.)
Very dry throat and mouth.

It seemed to improve in 2 weeks, then came back with more sneezing and a constantly tingly nose- as if a cold is brewing- sore neck glands and very sore nasal passages at back of nose when I swallow.

Feel exhausted by end of day and as if it's never ending.
Only working part time and doing very little else except walking 1-2 miles when it's a 'better day'.

Hope everyone feels better soon!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 08/03/2019 20:33

I have found my people. Started mid-December with a terrible cold, which keeps coming back. I eventually went to the doctor and was told it was a sinus infection, got amoxicillin and a steroid spray, which did seem to clear it a bit, but now it’s back full-tilt. I think I keep getting new doses, but it’s been MONTHS now. So, so fed up of being ill!

cryonik · 18/03/2019 20:46

two plus months of nausea and head fog, one month of viral sore throat. heres to hoping it will go away soon! anyone have any success?

MattyR · 12/01/2020 19:56

Picked up what I think is a flu virus a week before Xmas. Spent a week in bed feeling typically flu like with night sweats sore throat and cough. After the first week I felt marginally better but it would be much worse in the evening where I would have to lay down early. I returned to work on the 6th January thinking I was through with it but on Thursday it returned, feeling sweaty and hot without a temperature but sore throat and flem and feeling rubbish. Still feeling lousey it's the 12 Jan and I'm back in bed with headache. I just can't seem to shake the damn thing off. Anyone else recognise this. Not like anything I've had before.

Lavender133 · 13/01/2020 02:00

I have been unable to shake off a sore throat and a bad cough for over a week. No pmrovement to my condition whatsoever, in top of that I have been having the cough since Christmas but it's all gone to a different level now. Really worried about work asi have never been off for that long apart from when I was pregnant!

girlofthenorth · 13/01/2020 17:40

I have this too ! I was going to start a new thread.
Had chest infection and flu type illness early December , by Christmas I was able to get out of the house a bit in the day, but just so exhausted now with aches, but the main thing is tiredness and a bit of a temp . I've been unwell really since late November !!! All my bloods so far have been normal , I'm just desperate to start feeling better !!!!
Went back to work today and now feeling worse for going . I feel I can't go off sick again .

MattyR · 16/01/2020 18:39

Know what you mean about work. I"m back but not running on all four. Now have dry itchy cough and throat tickley. Yesterday evening began feeling lousey again. The most bizarre illness I've ever had due to its longevity.
