Hi all 😊

I need to have a neck and chest ct scan to check for a fish bone that has got stuck, I believe in my larynx.

Can anyone tell me whether the fish bone would be visible if I opt not to have the contrast dye? It wasn't visible on plain X-ray but I can 100% feel it and it keeps stabbing me.

I'm asking because in the past year I've suddenly become allergic to loads of things I've not had a problem with before, breaking out in hives left right and centre. I don't really fancy having the dye for this reason.

Thanks for your help 😊

I should have also said - there is also a possibility that it is a piece of meat that I aspirated rather than a fish bone. Thanks.

Hi Tush.
I don’t know much about CT but if the fish bone was not visible on the original X-ray then you will need to have contrast. The scan won’t actually be looking for the fish bone as such but any perforation or trapped air.

What fish was it? As some fish bones are not visible on xrays even if they are there.
