Unsure what to do

My 5 year old was diagnosed with viral tonsillitis by GP this afternoon and since then we have been alternating pain relief. He’s in so much pain, can’t sleep due to pain, has a high temp and is shivering.
My gut is he is too ill for this to be viral but GP didn’t see puss on his tonsils.
Should I take him to out of hours tonight? Thank you

I think ring 111 and ask for advice. Hope he's better soon.

Sometimes it can take a while for the pus to develop. Can you look yourself with phone torch. This is what I do with my kids. (I’ve been a long term sufferer of tonsillitis since a wee child, now late 30s).

I know I’ve taken my kids in the past when no pus only for them to appear shortly afterwards.

Even if no pus you know your wee one best.

Take him back to a doctor. Sounds bacterial to me. They need to do a swab test. It only takes 5 mins

Thanks all - ended up at out of hours. They re confirmed it’s viral but pretty severe so just got to keep checking throat in case any puss forms. He is a bit brighter and is now drinking and eating a little. Fingers crossed he continues to get better
