No rubella antibodies

My DP and I are TTC. I've recently had a blood test to check if I have been immunised against rubella. I know for a fact that I received the MMR vaccine as a baby and I also received the rubella booster when I was 13. I remember having the booster in my school's dining hall. I also rang my mum to ask her and she said I had.

Anyway, the test came back negative and now I have to have the MMR. It doesn't bother me at all and I'd rather have it done (my children will also receive it when we have them!) but I was just wondering if anyone else had their bloods come back like this?! Seems really odd when I know I definitely had it!!

I was the same..definitely had vac but didn't hold the immunity. Was preg with no1 when found out so had vac again after he was born.

Doesn’t work for everyone.
I’ve had 3 rounds of MMR and never developed antibodies.
I also had a mild case of measles (still horrifically unwell) a couple of months back

blueandstressed · 04/12/2018 19:41

The same happened to me, but I was pregnant at the time and had come in contact with a suspected rubella case (which wasn't rubella in the end) and needed to be tested. Apparently it's more common than you would think.

madmum5811 · 04/12/2018 19:44

I had german measles as a child, still came back negative all three times when I was pregnant so had the jab afterwards. The nurse said to me hers never took either, so it does happen.

Worieddd · 04/12/2018 19:46

Does every pregnant person have these bloods checked?

Lxx16 · 04/12/2018 19:46

Thank you all so much!! With all these tests I'm having I was just getting myself worked up about nothing from the sounds of it!

Booked in for the 20th for the third attempt!

Thank you again, definitely put my mind at rest :)

@Worieddd I'm not sure, I'm having lots of fertility tests and this was just one of 4 blood tests! If you are pregnant it may be worth asking your midwife if you're unsure of whether you're immune or not x

I found out I wasn't immune through fertility treatment as well. Had the MMR again but wasn't retested so no idea if it worked!

Annieshop · 04/12/2018 19:49

I had rubella when I was 7weeks pregnant, horrendous consequences.
Please check your antibodies before getting pregnant everyone.

Worieddd · 04/12/2018 19:51

Thanks OP.

It’s really interesting though. You would have thought you’d be immune if you’ve had the jab!

SoyDora · 04/12/2018 19:54

Yes I had the same, but didn’t realise I wasn’t immune until I was pregnant with DC1. I had the MMR again after she was born (when she was about 4 weeks old) and developed a horrific rubella rash which made me glad I never contracted the real thing!
I was told there was a small chance I still wouldn’t be immune after having it again but I’ve had 2 subsequent pregnancies and luckily I am.

Lxx16 · 04/12/2018 19:57

@Rogue1234 did they not retest then? That seems very strange when it's on their list and say you must be immunised before going down the treatment route.

@Worieddd I just assumed and all I had was a letter yesterday from my gynaecologist saying I must book in at the docs for it! Due to having had it, if I wasn't going through these tests I wouldn't have known otherwise

No, I just told them I'd had it and they carried on with the treatment the following month. We had to wait 30 days I think because it's a live vaccine, but no one ever checked to make sure I had actually done it.

AugustRose · 04/12/2018 21:16

I had this too. It wasn't discovered until my 3rd pregnany but I had german measles as a child and had all my vaccinations. I had a further MMR and was retested before another pregnancy but it still hadn't taken, I was told it wasn't worth doing it again.

JustWingingLifeAsUsual · 13/12/2018 19:21

I've never had the MMR vaccine as I was born around the time of Andrew Wakefield scandal so my Mum didn't vaccinate me. I am immune to rubella though (I was tested when I was pregnant). No idea why? Maybe I had it when I was younger.
