Toothache

I've had a toothache since Monday and I couldn't get a dentist appointment until next Monday so with the help of painkillers I've just been waiting it out. This morning I woke up and the pain was worse, I had a bit of a panic about it being the weekend and got myself an emergency appointment at the dentist. I've just got back and I'm confused and still in pain, the dentist did an X-ray and said that she can't see anything wrong and the tooth that is hurting is a root canal tooth which is basically a dead tooth so shouldn't be giving me any pain. She has given me some antibiotics but told me not to expect them to work because there isn't anything wrong and to go back on Monday to see my regular dentist.

This tooth is killing me so I'm not sure how there isn't anything wrong?!

Has anyone else had this? Has anyone had pain in a root canal tooth? The root canal was done about 2 years ago if not a bit longer.

Could it be extreme sensitivity from a neighbouring tooth? You wouldn't get pain from a root canal tooth as there's no nerve (but prepared to be told otherwise as am not a dentist).

Sensitive teeth can give you pain, could you try the sensitive toothpaste. Have you got some dec3nt painkillers. Could it be nerve pain.

Thanks for replying!

Would sensitivity give me constant pain? There isn't any let up and when it's really painful my jaw is hurting even though it's not a tooth near my jaw Confused I have some sensitive toothpaste so I will try that tonight. No idea what it could be but I really need it to stop!

I had a root canal and the tooth never stopped bothering me. There was still an abscess there despite the root canal and it had to be removed about 2 years later. The same happened to my mum. Also xrays don't show everything. I had another tooth that was killing me. The dentist did several xrays and said nothing was wrong. Eventually he noticed it was a little loose so he removed it. It had a massive hole in it that wasn't showing in the xray! Get another opinion if you're still in pain.

I had three days of pain, x-ray showed nothing, dentist coated it with some kind of hardening gel and told me to rub sensitive toothpaste on it if it happens again. I'm not a dentist, did they mention neuralgia. Years ago I suffered frequent tooth and jaw pain, had teeth removed, crowns, root canals but it occasionally came back. I feel for you, it's a miserable pain. I agree with pp, maybe see another dentist if you can get an appointment.

Sally and Holey thank you so much, I don't feel like I'm going completely crazy now!

I really thought it would be sorted today but to be told that there wasn't anything wrong really upset me as stupid as that sounds. I've got an appointment on Monday at 9.15 at the same practice but with a different dentist so I will see what she says but if she just sends me away I will try somewhere else. The dentist today didn't say much at all and I don't think she was happy about seeing me so just wanted me gone! I've just covered the tooth in some sensitive toothpaste so will see if that helps. x

Hope you feel better and get some sleep, I make sure I wrap my face in a scarf now when I go out in the cold weather,. Extreme weather seems to set it offSad
