Ibuprofen and paracetomol combinations - URGENT ADVICE PLEASE!

Hi there
My DS is feeling very poorly with a temp of 105f. I know this is very high indeed. He is complaining of aching body, sore throat, one minute he is shivering so much his teeth are chattering, the next, he's sweating and removing all his clothes.
Unbelievably, he is 5½ yrs old and even so, I still need to ask this question (and I have a DD who is 2½ yrs) so you'd think I know the answer but as they have both been very healthy children, I need some advice.

I obviously need to get his temp down as a matter of urgency. Can I alternate child's nurofen with calpol? If so, at what intervals?

Any other advice greatly appreciated xxx

give both at same time initially and then alternate 4hrly

if no improvement, i would get him to A&E

lulumama · 20/06/2007 17:15

yes, you can alternate think a dose every 2 hours.....i think !

chevre · 20/06/2007 17:15

when dd had a sore ear nhs direct told me to max out on both. you don't need an interval between the two only between the dosage (if that makes sense)

VeryBigCake · 20/06/2007 17:15

ibru is every 6 hours, calpol every 4

sugarfree · 20/06/2007 17:16

yes you can,calpol is 4-6 hourly,nurofen is 8 hourly.
Strip him off, tepid sponging, fluids and ice lollies etc.

littlemissbossy · 20/06/2007 17:17

yes give him nurofen as well
and sponge bath him in tepid water
if that doesn't work pronto get him to a doctor
105 is very high
HTH

sugarfree · 20/06/2007 17:17

sorry,nurofen is 6 hourly.

Curmudgeonlett · 20/06/2007 17:17

yes you can

you can give them both at the same time or you can intersperse so every 2 - 3 hours you have something to give him

strip him off

try lukewarm (body temp) bath? not cold water

Wisteria · 20/06/2007 17:18

Dr told me to give Ibu and Para every 2 hours alternately when dd was at 104 and hallucinating, I also kept putting her in a luke warm bath and splashing her and tried to forcefeed her with energy drink!
Very scary; hope he'll be ok xx

aznerak · 20/06/2007 17:19

just so you know paracetomal stabilises a temp, ibuprofen brings it down

aznerak · 21/06/2007 13:14

Hi everyone
Thanks for the advice last night. We kept him dosed up all evening, night and again today. His temperature is still up but not as bad as yesterday - it is currently 101. He is feeling bit better in himself and has an appetite so that is good.
Anyway, just wanted to pass on my thanks to those that offered help and support! A x
