IBS and low fodmap

After almost ten years of discomfort finally completed all the necessary examinations with the Gastro doctors at the hospital. The outcome, my GP tells me, is 'just' IBS. Which I guess is a relief at some level.

He's given me a fact sheet for the low fodmap diet and asked me to consider that as an effective way to reduce the unpleasant symptoms. At first glance is looks mega restrictive and, frankly, I don't know how I would keep up the discipline.

Anyone tried and got any input from their experience. Also, will I need to go to a dietitian to help me with this?

For starters just google up low fodmap, it's a really strange set of foods that you have to restrict but a friend who's been doing it for a year says it's pretty okay really - much easier than zero gluten or zero dairy, for example. And she's been sitting comfortably for the first time in a decade.
