Is this 'normal' for my age?

Hello,

I am in my late fifties. I have always been a little forgetful, but recently this is getting worse and is impacting on my life.

Over the last two weeks, for example, I have forgotten several items that were written on a shopping list, even though I had the list in front of me; I have got the wrong time for a meeting, even though this was written in my diary clearly and I have forgotten an important work commitment, which was also written in my diary in bold letters. Then there are the little things such as forgetting my purse when I go shopping or forgetting my PIN.

The problems seem to be mainly memory based, so I was wondering if this is just something we have to live with as we get older or whether I should see the GP.

Have you had any illness or stress recently? These things can contribute to this sort of business.

Either way a trip to the doctor won't hurt and they can refer you for help if your memory needs a boost.x

Hello,

Yes, i have considered stress. There is an ongoing, low burning stressful situation and this could contribute. However, i think a trip to the GP might prevent fears of something more serious becoming another source of stress.

Thank you

I think you should not just accept it. Stress, menopause, loads of other possible causes, very few serious. I think I saw a programme about memory issues once that said ‘forgetting your keys or your pin more, not a big deal, warning sign of something worse like early dementia is eg getting lost on a familiar route. Hope you work it out.

Losing your car keys , normal. Finding your car keys but not knowing what they're for , not normal.
