DS has swollen face- not sure whether its an allergy or not

My DS2 who is nearly 3 woke up this morning and his eye was all swollen. Looked like he was going to get a black eye but I didn't have a clue how he'd done it. Thought he must have banged it on his bed or something. Dropped him off at play school and by lunchtime it had gone down but both his cheeks then looked swollen instead.

The only thing I can think if it is an allergic reaction is that I had a snickers bar yesterday and he had a bit of the chocolate off it. But wouldn't that have caused the reaction yesterday and not today?

Am confused as don't know much about allergies.

is it just the one eye or both of them?

supertrouper · 18/06/2007 20:56

Was just the one that I noticed.

don't know then, sorry, unless it could be something like hayfever, you know how it can make your eyes go puffy?

supertrouper · 18/06/2007 21:04

I was wondering about hay fever a bit back as I get it but would it affect just one eye and does it make your face swell up? Maybe I just didn't notice other eye because it wasn't as swollen. Gave him some antihistamines before he went to bed to see if that helped with the swelling.

Probably best to take him to docs tomorrow. Thanks for reply.

you're welcome, has the swelling gone down yet? is he still weeing ok and feeling ok in himself? hope the gp is able to shed some light on it

Hi my son has had this since about 3 years too - happens about 6 times a year, usually summertime and always overnight.

We've seen an opthalmologist who has said it's hayfever, though it is unusual for it to affect only one eye and for it not to be watery etc. Usually goes away pretty quickly after some antihistamine drops, though I've never noticed it affecting any other part of his face.

His eyelid gets quite discoloured and the only other thing that he said it might be (though is unlikely as very rare) is some kind of varicose vein in the eyelid. I do keep an eye on what he eats in the 24 hours before it happens but have never noticed a pattern. I am also sometimes suspicious of it being when he wears goggles swimming or maybe has been playing roughly with his brother.

I am starting to ignore it really, though have had to get some antihistamine on prescription so they have a supply in school so I'm not called it should it ever happen then.

HTH

Yes he has weeing fine and was his usual boisterous self today so not worried there, swelling is not too bad at the moment. Just been scaring myself on the internet looking at what face swelling is a symptom of. Always regret looking as am the world's biggest worrier and am now worried about him in case it gets worse when I am asleep.

Thanks for that abusybee. Think we'd better go to the doctors tomorrow just in case. It could well be hayfever because he has eczema and aren't the two related? Just strange that one eye looked really bad.

with my guy it's always the same eye (right)and the other is completely unaffected.

Thinking back to the first few times the gp always wanted to see him (always seemed to be at weekends so phone consults to the locum) to make sure it wasn't a stye (not sure how you spell that!) and he often had a red ear when they looked in so he ended up on antibiotics for a few times. The opthalmologist said that with an allergy the ear would look red anyway so he didn't think that it was infected at all and to stop any antibiotics.

The second GP we saw didn't even look into his eye but said allergy even as he was walking across the room.

how is your ds today?

Pimmpom · 20/06/2007 14:41

Super - hope ds is ok.

Just thought I would add my twopenneth worth

DS developed a swollen eye twice - looked like he had been punched in the face.
First time GP treated for eye infection even though I said he had been cooking at school. The next time he sent him off for blood tests. We found out he is allergic to nuts.

He has hayfever, but doesn't seem to get swollen eyes with it, only when he has eaten something.
