Amitriptyline

I have been prescribed amitriptyline for nerve pain from sciatica and endometriosis. I am hoping this will help to stop me being awake at night with pain.

From previously taking this I remember it is sedating but wondered how long it is likely to take to get used to a 10 mg dose.

Oh good! It's an amazing drug (and often underused imo). I tried everything with my nerve pain and after 6 months of severe pain, this is the drug that finally made me turn a corner. It helps me sleep, and I rarely have migraines anymore. It's also helped my anxiety.

Really glad you're getting a benefit from it.

Can i take other pain killers with amitriptyline? I am finding it difficult to get to sleep.

Yes you can!

Jellyjumpers · 28/10/2018 07:41

BBrilliBrilliant. I was actually fine without taking anything. In the past i would have been kept awake for half the night in pain. Whereas once i fell asleep i slept well and didnt care about the pain when i did wake.

Hoping that others who tried this found it to be useful.

You can take paracetamol, codeine, NSAIDs, all fine.

I tend to just take the ami at night, but in the morning I'll have naproxen and paracetamol.

maxthemartian · 28/10/2018 13:34

@IWantMyHatBack what dosage do you take?
I have nerve pain and anxiety and am considering this but someone said at a pain dose it wouldn't have an affect on the anxiety.

Jellyjumpers · 28/10/2018 18:30

Its good to know i can take all my usual painkillers if needed.

While my understanding is that it is necessary to take over 75mg for an ad a 10 mg dose has left me feeling better in myself, maybe due to a redduction in pain and better sleep.

@maxthemartian I take a tiny dose for pain. Only started a few days ago but it seems to affect my anxiety hugely! I am sleeping better and feel much more chilled.
Tomorrow could be interesting though. Back to school and going to have to get up! Shock

wineandsunshine · 28/10/2018 19:38

I saw my neurologist last week and he said once you get to 50mg side effects do occur and most people decide to stop taking it. But he did say it takes that amount to actually stop neuropathic pain...I'm going to slowly up mine over the next few weeks!

maxthemartian · 28/10/2018 19:53

Thank you @Wolfiefan that's encouraging! Glad it's worked so well for you Smile

Wolfiefan · 28/10/2018 20:10

So far so goodnight. I think it can take a couple of weeks to really kick in. Hoping for less pain, more sleep and a calmer me too. I know. I don’t want much do I! Grin

NotCitrus · 28/10/2018 20:44

I took it and it was a miracle cure for joint pain, but the side effects of exhaustion and muscle pain were intolerable for me so I had to give up. I tried again some months later but same thing. Ditto gabapentin and pregabalin, sadly.

Wolfiefan · 28/10/2018 20:46

It’s muscle and joint pain I’m taking it for. Shock
I’m on a very low dose. Not exhausted so long as I take it early enough. But ask me again tomorrow morning when I have to be up early. Shock

Jellyjumpers · 28/10/2018 21:31

@Wolfiefan Glad it is working well for you. I am also apprehensive about waking up for work here’s hoping we both mannage tomorrow.

Wolfiefan How are yo getting on? I actually found this morning easier than before i took the tablets. Getting a good nights sleep outweighs the sleepiness for me it seems.

Wolfiefan · 29/10/2018 07:52

Me too! I’m up and dressed and ready for the day. Slept so well!!

Jellyjumpers · 29/10/2018 21:17

Glad you managed well getting up. I cant believe how well i felt today. While i am getting some pain i am finding things much more manageable.
If offered another lap for the endometreosis i am not sure i want to proceed.

I feel much better. Though my anxiety is being tested today. And the cold doesn’t help. Still. I’m sleeping better than I have in ages. Don’t feel doped up. Just sleepy at bedtime. So glad to hear you’re doing well too.
