Anorectal abscess

Has anyone had one of these and managed to clear it with antibiotics? Just been diagnosed and am very frightened cos I know they can get bad and lead to needing surgery. Dr has prescribed antibiotics but it's a wait and see which way it goes situation.

Any success stories welcome.

Someone must have had one, come on. I know it's not fun to talk about but I'm desperate here.

Haven't had one but the success rate is poor with Abx as they don't penetrate the abscess (the bacteria's way of hiding from the immune system). Sometimes the only way is either lancing or the abscess naturally opening and then it can perpetuate if it drains and the cavity remains.

Sorry

Yes I've read this myself. Mine is so small and was caught early that there's nothing in to drain yet, this is why the doctor thinks there's a chance the antibiotics could stop it. Just wondered if anyone else had success by catching theirs early too.

Yup, a week of penicillin cured mine 18months ago. It was no bigger than a grape.

avoschmadoo that's awesome, thank you for replying. I only got antibiotics yesterday but I'm definitely not getting worse so trying to stay hopeful.

Just a quick update for anyone who has this issue in future. I got the antibiotics on Tuesday afternoon, it's now Sunday afternoon and the abscess is gone. So the key is to not be embarrassed and ask for help early.

I had one and within 4 days it was burst and I had surgery for a fistula. I was also on antibiotics from day 2.

Really glad yours has healed up. Long may it last.

Glad it's gone. Stay well OP.
