Persistent thrush when I take antibiotics

I have just got thrush after antibiotics which happens every time and I have to take antibiotics quite a lot as I get a few chest infections a year due to asthma. It is painful and annoying. I am ok at treating it - I know what works for me - but any tips on avoiding it please or am I doomed to getting it every time I take antibiotics? The doctor said there isn’t anything preventative when antibiotics are the cause and also that there is no point treating the thrush until the antibiotics finish so the thrush really has a chance to take hold before I can treat it.

If you know you'll get it the Dr can prescribe treatment at the same time as the antibiotics.

Take with a good quality refrigerated probiotic capsule.

Thanks. Yeah doctor can prescribe but said no point starting them until antibiotics finished

How odd. It's worth starting a cream even just for the relief of symptoms even if its not gonna get rid completely.

This is rubbish. You can buy thrush treatment over the counter, or ask your doctor to prescribe it when you get your antibiotics. If your doctor won’t help then it might be worth seeing your local sexual health clinic who will be used to managing recurrent thrush

You can take fluconazole tablet at the same time as the antibiotic. It’s routine in some countries just to prescribe them together!

Ok good to know. Thank you

I'd go further back than that! Shocking that your GP isn't working with you to better manage your asthma and preventing repeated chest infections! When did you last have an asthma review by a specialist?

Deminism · 18/10/2018 14:44

Thanks graphista. That is all in hand hence all the sputum tests leading to the discovery of the infections and the many rounds of antibiotics. Consultant appt next month.

I get this and my doctor always gives me thrush medication along with my antibiotics.

Glad you're getting that sorted repeated chest infections are a pain I know.

I have reduced lung function due to scar tissue and asthma it's NEVER a "simple chest infection" with me either!

Hope you get well treated
