This is my husband's ankle. He went over on it playing football yesterday. It's hugely swollen and hot but he can hobble around. He's a doctor avoider despite me insisting going to casualty. We're doing RICE and ibu gel. Can a sprain look this bad?

Yes I had similar in January, was told could take up to eight weeks to get better. Rest was the only thing that helped.

Definitely. I'm recovering from one and it was more swollen and bruised. I went to mi who recommended gentle exercises -flex/point toes, draw circles and figures of eight and walking in supportive footwear, but not too far. Heel raises when can weight bear. Nurofen for pain and inflammation. No sport.

6 weeks on it still gets sore if I overdo it and is not yet back to full strength. Was told it could take 3 months ( and past experience bears that out).

It’s also possible to walk around on a broken leg for weeks/months. My father in law did.

There’s some useful advice here, if you haven’t already seen it www.nhs.uk/conditions/sprains-and-strains/

If you are worried, is there any chance that he could get an urgent GP appointment tomorrow?
