Heavy bleeding after sex

Ribrabrob · 07/10/2018 18:18

A few weeks ago I had sex and bled heavily afterwards (fresh blood and lasted around 24 hours). My late period was due around this time and after the initial bleeding had finished, my period started immediately afterwards.

Last night I had sex again with heavy bleeding again afterwards, very fresh red blood. Still bleeding now. As well as this - and perhaps unrelated - my anus has been sore for a few days and I haven't been able to figure out why. Hurts to sit down, constant ache etc. But, from what I can tell, the bleeding isn't coming from my anus - I'm fairly certain it's coming from my vagina/vulva.

Both times the sex wasn't overly rough but harder than usual I suppose so perhaps this could be it, however I have had much more vigorous sex than it before without bleeding so I'm not too sure.

I know I need to go the doctors really but getting an appointment at my surgery is extremely difficult, could be weeks until I can get in. I think I have access to a walk in centre though, although I've not used one before - would this issue warrant it, or do I just need to wait for an appointment at my surgery?

Also has anybody had any similar experience or have an idea what it could be?

My apologies if any of this is tmi, I'm just a bit worried really.

I had this, was told I had cervical erosion and had my cervix cauterised.

Haven’t bled since!

Oh god, that doesn't sound nice! Was it easily sorted?

Thanks for responding.

You need to see your GP quite quickly really. A walk in centre may not be appropriate as you need referral to gynae/colposcopy, and some WIC aren’t contracted to do referrals and will send you back to your GP anyway.

When you call the GP surgery tell them you need an urgent appointment. If they are insistent that you tell them why, say you have heavy postcoital bleeding and pain.

Hopefully it’s nothing but you need to be seen ASAP.

(I’m a practice nurse).

A cervical ectropion can cause this- it's fairly common. But you definitely need to see a doctor to be sure. Good luck

Easily sorted following the cauterisation- the procedure itself was uncomfortable but not painful. I had what felt like intense period pains for 48 hours afterwards, but that was in May this year and I haven’t bled after sex since.

Happy to answer any questions by PM if easier!

Thank you for the advice all.

I called NHS Direct yesterday (could not get an apt at drs) as the bleeding became even more heavy and I felt quite faint. They advised o go to the walk in centre who were lovely but as suggested above not really much they could do, said I just need to ride it out and see my GP once the bleeding had stopped.

Thanks again

Don’t wait for the bleeding to stop. Make an urgent GP appointment now.

You can also try going to get a full STI check to see if they can pick up anything that could cause the bleeding if it’s after intercourse.4

I also have the same issue (not as heavy) but I am on the contraceptive injection, GP told me to get tested, I came back clean so it’s probably due to the depo

@Ribrabrob did you ever get behind the cause of this?
