Constant Heartburn - Not Pregnant

Just wondering if anyone has any experience of this and what I can do to relief it as it is really getting to me now For the last few days I have the constant feeling of something behind my breast bone and the acid coming up from stomach.

This is especially bad at night and I keep waking up every couple of hours with it and am having to try and sleep on my back with 3 pillows under my head (not easy when you're used to sleeping on your side )

Milk used to help, but it doesn't anymore and I've since read that it actually makes it worse. At the moment, yogurt is helping with the acid long enough to let me get to sleep until morning (this is usually about 3am when I give up and get the yogurt out). My thinking is that yogurt is basically made from milk and that like milk it will do more harm than good in the long run.

I'm going to buy a bottle of Gaviscon today but I don't want to be taking that for a long period of time. Does anyone have any advice on what I can do to get rid of it?

TIA

Gaviscon is good, try to get Gaviscon Extra if you can which is brilliant. There's no harm in taking it for a while, it isn't absorbed by your body (which is why you can take it when pg) and it might give you enough relief to get rid of it naturally.

I have strained a muscle in my chest which feels very like heartburn - sure its not that?

Sorry, no helpful advice I'm afraid HS.

You could always have a word with the pharmacist and see what they suggest.

what about trying some 'friendly baceria' stuff(forgotten the 'correct term!')
acidophillus can be bought from health food shops in capsules(dairy sourced and non dairy)-this should improve the balance of your digestive system
I had bad indigestion all through my pgs but it stopped after
think some the best foods to avoid are fruit juice, pastry ,dairy, red wine, oily fish
have you tried peppermint tea, fennel tea or chamomile tea all these are good -when i was pg i would make a big pot of all three and add fresh ginger and honey too -strange flavour mix but it worked!!
have you tried bio yogs ?

earlygirl · 25/08/2004 09:16

sorrry you have tried yog-it is different from milk cause the lactose has been broken down-(think its ok for some people with dairy intolerance to eat it because of this)

Thanks everyone

Bought some Gaviscon today, and so far it's working for a while. Will give it a couple more days then maybe go see doc as I never had heartburn this bad even when I was pregnant

Enid, I don't think it's a strained muscle as I can feel the acid coming up from my stomach. Fio, if it's linked to aneamia, that could be a possible explanation as I'm sure I'm aneamic again. Plus it started a few days ago and it seemed to be through the night after DP and I having a tiff and not talking to each other If that was a factor, then hopefully it will settle down again as we are finally talking again after 4 days

Well I had a full night's sleep from 2am (ok, I'm a bit of a night owl sometimes ) until 7am which has been unheard of over the last week! Not sure if it's down to the gaviscon or the fact that DP and I made up

May be a lesson for me not to get stroppy at DP easily again if this is how I will be repaid lol

Are you taking any medications as they can cause indigestion? Zantac or Zoton are the best remedies as they work on the brain and not the gut (honestly!). Gaviscon is OK but more topical (is that the word I want?), you know what I mean?!! I've had years of indigestion treatments due to taking steroids.....
