Weird growth in mouth

Over the last 2 months I've managed to grow something in my mouth....I can best describe it as a 'large polyp', it's purple (so presumably very vascular) and hangs from the gum above my upper molar, so it hangs down over the tooth.

It started out as a sore spot which my dentists said was probably just toothbrush catching the gum, but never became an ulcer or anything - just quickly developed into this polyp which is still growing. It's uncomfortable though not painful. No other pain, redness, sore sports etc nearby. The tooth it's growing next to was crowned over a decade ago and dentist checked last visit, said no decay there.

Have a dentist's appointment next Monday but ridiculously anxious about this and have been obsessively Googling this thing for almost a month (made appointment over 3 weeks ago). Can't find anything online that looks even remotely like my growth.

Anyone had anything similar? And what was it?!

Have you looked up mucocele?
They are quite common and totally benign. They also vary in colour from opaque to purple.

I hadn't as I've been trying to match pictures and didn't know what to search for but this helpful, thank you.

Not seeing any pictures that match my growth but that doesn't mean it's not the same, of course!

Hopefully your dentist is able to identify what it is. If not, I'd see your GP to rule out anything sinister, however unlikely!
