Has anyone had a very heavy baby that went on to be an overweight child?

I'm just curious as just read depressing research about how "heavy" babies are far more likely to be obese adults. My DS is right at the top of the centiles for weight and was over 10lbs at birth. However, have also heard lots of anecdotal evidence about huge babies becoming 'normal' sized children. Should I be worried?

nope.
As long as he eats healthily and excerises well then you shouldn't have any worries.

My DD2 was huge she put on weight at a rate of knots. Now however she's 4 and is just plumptious gorgeousness. She has half the appetite that my DD1 had at her age, yet DD1 is a veritable whippet.

Please don't get caught up in bodyweight issues for your baby.

no I have had two out of four babies born around 9.5 lbs, became HUGE babies, and started skinnying down as toddlers. One is a super skinny busy 6 yr old who can't keep his trousers up to save his life because his arse is so flat, and the other is a perfectly normal sized 16mth old who seemingly gets taller and slimmer every day

the other two are also beanpoles

just feed them properly and let them run around a lot and you'll be fine

DS was born weighing 9 lb 10. He is now 6 and weighs about 3 stone 4 or 5. He was a chubby baby and toddler. He is just as skinny as his classmates - several ribs on show, but I would say quite bigboned - his knees and shoulder blades protrude a lot. I got in bed with him last night (first time for over two years) because he was coughing really badly and he really is not very cuddly.

indiasmum · 12/06/2007 15:08

i dont think so. my ds1 was nearly 10lbs born and is now a tall and slender 8 yr old.

My friend's son was officially the largest child in NZ until he was about 3. He's now a normal, atheletic, healthy, 6 foot 4, 22 year old. His mother was just an extremely enthusastic breastfeeder.

quokka · 12/06/2007 15:18

I was told by my HV that my ds1 was going to grow to be obese as he was off the chart at 4 months. It was total crap he is a very lean tall taoddler now - just loved his breastmilk at the time. I mean how can you over bf a baby!!!

Ettenna · 12/06/2007 15:18

I think I'm a bit paranoid because my mum and brother have had lifelong weight problems and I really don't want my LO to suffer the same way. He's exclusively bf and is VERY long (off the charts I reckon)

If he is very long that's probably why he's at the top of the centiles. It sounds like he's all in proportion.

Healthy attitude towards food and exercise is the most important.

expatinscotland · 12/06/2007 15:29

Some people are born to be fat.

quokka · 12/06/2007 15:36

I think if you have an issue with his/her weight then it will get passed down to them.

OrmIrian · 12/06/2007 15:45

Not yet. My 2 DSs were 10lb 4 and DD was 9lb 6. All of them are tall and slim ...so far. No major weight problems in my family on but DH's family are all quite large so I'm keeping an discrete eye.

Lizzylou · 12/06/2007 15:50

DS1 was 8lb 13oz and then was a massive baby, really very plump, he is now a very slim 3 1/4 yr old. DS2 was 10lb 11oz and, at 15mths has yet to slim down, but he is much bigger boned and not keen on walking so not as active.

I was the smallest birth weight of my 3 siblings yet struggle with my weight the most, I have to really watch what I eat and exercise loads to maintain an acceptable weight. But I am the only female and the eldest!

misdee · 12/06/2007 15:52

dd2 was massive I(pics in my profiles for her cubbygorgeousness), and is now a slim v tall 4 year old.

quokka · 12/06/2007 16:05

by the way I was a HUGE buba, weight over 10lb when born and just got fatter and fatter - I struggle to keep weight on now, very skinny and am quite tall.

SallyAllbright · 12/06/2007 16:17

I was a big baby, but now an average size 14, never had any particular problems with my weight.

DD was exclusively breastfed, and always at the top of the chart for weight and height. Now at 2.2 she is 19kg (3 stone) and nearly 1m tall! She isn't fat though, she looks fine in proportion to her height. She has really slimmed down in the last couple of months since the warm weather started and she has been spending a lot more time running around outside. I don't think she will ever be a beanpole, but I don't expect that she will be obese either.

I really wouldn't worry about it just yet.

indiasmum · 12/06/2007 18:37

my friend was a massive aby and now she is 6 ft tall with a modelo fig4re to die for.

i think its mainly down to diet and family size iykwim

indiasmum · 12/06/2007 18:37

sorry about typos. an over enthusiastic toddler on lap!!!

Ettenna · 12/06/2007 19:36

Thanks for all your responses; it's reassuring to see that big babies are often slim when older!!
