Ultrasound scan while still bleeding?

I'm booked to have a trans vaginal ultrasound on Friday. I've had some pelvic pain, which fortunately has now settled down but also had 3 horrendously long heavy periods in 6 weeks. Typically it looks like I'll be bleeding for the scan as it shows no sign of stopping. Should I rearrange the appointment? Would you go?

Give the department a call to check, but it won't be anything the sonographer hasn't seen or worked with before.

Just called the department who said from their point of view it's fine to go ahead but it's up to me. Can't decide. Obviously I want to know what's happening but I feel very embarrassed too.

The department will see this lots. I would use a pay and try to get answers

Its very very normal (im a sonographer). We scan so many people with unusual bleeding or on their period. Please dont worry.

That's very reassuring, thank you.

I see happy's beaten me to it. Don't be embarrassed. When I had IVF I had scans while having periods - as part of the treatment (the IVF team have to scan early cycle - day 2 or 3 - to make sure your ovaries don't have any cysts/partially developed follicles left over from the previous cycle - which means scanning you while you're bleeding). Sonographers will be used to this.

I’ve had a dildocam ultrasound whilst bleeding because of the dignity and glamour that is ivf too. It was absolutely fine and The sonography remains was chatty and normal and totally unphased.

The only thing I would say is take a reasonably hefty sanitary towel for after as adding ultrasound gel to the mix can make the bleeding seem heavier (don’t think it really is, just the gel makes it seem more).

I had this, and I rang the hospital to tell them about my heavy bleeding, and they arranged a different date for me to go. They said they wouldn't be able to get a clear look at what was going on with all that bleeding

eurochick · 26/09/2018 16:49

As others have said, it's normal during ivf. Sonographers will not bat an eyelid.

Yes I had mine while bleeding.
