its sunday evening and I have cystitis, why does it never happen when the chemist is open?

Does anyone out there have any good home remedies to aleviate the maddening feeling of desperately needing the loo and having a bladder the size of a football, when I know very well there is nothing there. Help, please!

Ring your friends, see if they have any medicine in their cabinets

Cranberry juice

treacletart · 10/06/2007 17:57

cranberry juice, pearl barley, lots of water, lots of rest, lots of sympathy then get to a chemist as soon as you can..

Paracetamol (if you're in pain and/or have a temp)and loads of fluids, not cranberry juice, it's good for helping prevent UTI's, but can irritate lining of bladder when there's an infection.

I would echo all that's been said before about bland fluids. A hot water bottle between the legs is great for taking away the sting and dull ache after emptying your bladder, although that might be a bit uncomfortable if it's as warm where you are as it is here!

When you do get the chance to buy a remedy, I've always found the liquid versions that you mix with water to be the quickest acting.

Also, a bath with some bicarb of soda in it can take away some of the discomfort in the short term and I've been told that if you put some bicarb of soda in some weak diluted juice and drink it, it can also help, (preferably orange barley water), although I've never tried that one.

Cranberry juice yes but not the kind with sugar in! If possible get the cranberry capsules from the health food shop they have more of the active ingredient in. And if you are running a fever or your kidneys ache you may need antibiotics. Good luck, it's awful isn't.

my main problem is the feeling that I absolutely have to go to the loo now and all the pain and urgency associated with that, and then when I go there is nothing there. This is driving me insane, is there anything else!!!! Antibiotics have worked in the past but will have to wait for the morning for them!! am I just a big baby, please tell me I'm not.

have you got a local paper which will tell you any emergency chemists that are open?
It's important to treat it asap in case it spreads to your kidneys iirc

Not sure if you're still there, but slight variations on previous posts.
1 - try and get through a pint of water every hour at least, very very diluted barley water or cranberry juice, but remember they both contain sugar which bugs love, and make sure it's not very cold, and sip it very frequently don't neck it!! As soon as you have water coming through at a rate of knots, you'll feel better, because having something to wee out is far less painful!
2 - Taking an anti-inflammatory is better in terms of the various symptoms than straight paracetamol, if you have any nurofen or similar in the house. If you've already taken paracetamol, just take the nurofen 3-4 hours later..ie before you go to bed.
3 - Warm bath with soda bic, good idea, if you have any lavender, add, because just getting more relaxed stops it being such a sod.
4 - Some mini-marts etc have Cystemme and similar behind hte counter these days with the fags..... maybe you've one of those near by?
