Epic tonsillitis

Hello everyone, this is my first post, I feel very much like I’m just complaining, but I would be really grateful for some advice.
In the last 3 months (just under) I have had tonsilitis 6 times. I feel like my throat is being grated like lemon zest. Last time I spent the night in hospital with quinsy. I have an appointment next month to discuss a tonsillectomy, but I don’t meet the 7 times/year criteria and there can be an 18 week wait.
This minor illness seems to be taking over my life. When it flares I cannot talk or eat properly and I am sad and frustrated at all i have and likely will miss out on (socially and financially).
Has anyone experienced anything similar? Or have any advice to offer? What are people’s thoughts on going private?

Sorry didn't want to read and run.

So sorry you're feeling so poorly. I also suffer from tonsillitis and don't meet the criteria. I have been using numbing sprays and gargling loads with salt and water and this seems to help for a while. Also lots of ice cream.

Hope you feel better soon Thanks

I would push for blood tests to rule out any underlying issues. Used to suffer from recurrent tonsillitis in the lead up to a big diagnosis and I was told it was due to the body struggling / crying out for help. Once the diagnosis was dealt with, there have been no repeat infections!

It's a horrible illness - I'd definitely contact a private hospital and find out what they can do, how quickly, and the cost.

Sorry to hear you’ve got the same problem, and thanks for the tips!

Yes, I might do that, sorry to hear you had a big diagnosis and hope that all is okay now.

Thank you for your reply, I contacted a private hospital today so here’s hoping.

I don't get it often, but every time it's getting worse. Last time was surgery to remove an abscess that had formed (complication of quincy) and 3 nights in hospital. On my follow up I was told that if I had a second bout of quincy they'd take my tonsils out. If I had the money I'd definitely have mine out privately!

Not much to add but if you can afford to go privately then I would think that's a good decision. My DS had tonsillitis a few times between 1-2yrs and they waited so long with the various waiting lists that he almost died. I don't think you're about to die but it is likely that you will be faffed about for a while before anything is done on the NHS.
