Metronidazole and Flucloxacillin

I'm taking flucloxacillin 4 times a day for 7 days for mastitis. I've now been given metronidazole 400mg 3 tablets a day for 3 days for an infection in my wisdom tooth to take at the same time. My dentist said that taking both "will probably upset your stomach" but I obviously have to. Has anyone had both at the same time? Is it going to be bad?

I'm on Metronidazole and Amoxicillin and haven't had any tummy problems really. Possibly a little 'looser' than normal on the first day, but by no means diarrhoea.

GMtoBe · 17/09/2018 15:50

Thanks Plug!
I had visions of vomiting and all sorts. I'm also dreading inevitably getting thrush but that's a minor issue.

Take the Metronidazole in between the Fluclox, to help one be absorbed before next one comes.

eg 6am, 12am, 6pm 10pm Fluclox
9am, 2pm, 8pm Metro

Thanks Dory, I will do. One needs to be taken on an empty stomach and one with food so that should work out nicely

I had metronidazole on its own once before for a tooth infection, and the first dose made me throw up. I had to ask the dentist to change it for another antibiotic It's really strong- check whether you need to take with food as you'll know about it if you get it wrong!

Magissa · 17/09/2018 15:57

I had diverticulitis and was prescribed both those antibiotics at the same time. You will probably feel pretty unwell at first and not feel like eating. When I had them I had two days of being wiped out. I guess you must feel pretty wiped out anyway with mastitis and a tooth abscess. Hope you feel better soon.

Metronidazole gives me stomach pain and makes me nauseated. I found that drinking a lot of water before and eating a banana before drinking it made it much easier

GMtoBe · 17/09/2018 16:22

Thank you for the advice everyone! I just took my first metronidazole with a banana and water about 20 minutes ago so just waiting to see what happens now.

I had metronidazole prescribed last week due to my c section incision becoming infected. It gave me a bit of an upset stomach but nothing too bad and certainly not painful.

DoryNow · 17/09/2018 16:27

Hope you get better soon sounds like you're a tad run down & getting all sorts?

PS You don't have to get up @ 6am to start that regime, just an example!

I think I am Dory.
My 11 month dd is teething and has a cold and is very unsettled. She bit me really hard when feeding which I believe started the mastitis, then my gum started the day after. DH is working crazy hours at the moment so I think I've just been doing too much without having a proper rest. Lesson learnt!

P.s. I'm up at 5.30am with dd anyway so may as well do what you suggested!

I was extremely nauseous and had symptoms of vertigo on Metronidazole. Was prescribed cyclizine for that. It worked a treat, but I wasn't breastfeeding, so am not sure if it would be ok for you. Might be worth enquiring if you need it, though.

Pinkgeorge · 17/09/2018 16:38

Please don’t touch any alcohol whilst taking Metronidazole, not in food, mouthwash anything !! It can make you very very poorly. And not for a couple of days after you stop taking it.

PetraDelphiki · 17/09/2018 16:43

I was just about to say the same as pink...you DO NOT want to have any alcohol AT ALL with metronidazole...

GMtoBe · 17/09/2018 16:44

Oh god I just realised I bought regular corsodyl which contains alcohol this morning. I'll have to go and get the alcohol free one tomorrow

Metronixadol is horrible stuff - don't take a sip of alcohol with it or you'll be vomiting for 24 hours.

I had it for amoebic dysentery after a trip to Central America and it cured me - but it was brutal!!

LilaGrace · 17/09/2018 17:34

It is brutal isn't it. Does anyone know what the alternative is called, for those who can't stomach it?
