How to register with dentist?

I really need go to the dentist but I've never registered myself; I was registered a few years ago before I left home, but I've never done it myself. Does anyone know how I can actually register, preferably online, with a dentist in Scotland?

Do you want nhs or private?

We got recommendations, then looked at their websites to see which of those were taking on nhs patients and then phoned/emailed (we did it twice for boring reasons).
