9 month old has ear infection following bad cld. Been giving calprofen and calpol interspersed as advised by GP and temp still high as soon as meds wear off....now had temp for 48 hours! DD doesn't like milk normally and takes v small amounts of spoon feed. Dd on 25th centile...normally v healthy but slim. Since had temp DD will only take water from her cup and refuses and milk or any spoon feed at all. I;m gettng wet nappies as she's taking water but really worried about her losing weight and getting worse through having no energy due to not eating anything at all. Please can anyone advise? Is it normal for LO to go off food and milk when poorly?

Absolutely normal for them to lose appetite. Don't worry about the food aspect, she'll start earing agian when she feels better, I'd be concentrating on getting her temp down, that's awfully high.

Try giving her a tepid bath, then just keep a nappy on her,no clothes. If it doesn't go down soon I'd take her back to the GP

in my experience this is normal when they are like this BUT if you are worried take her back to GP or to out of hours or to A&E. Nobody will give you grief for worrying with such alittle one. Try tepid flannels to cool her down (although mine screamed!) and open a window. make sure she does drink something very regularly. Food doesn't really matter for a few days honestly, it's dehydration that's the worry. hope it works out ok, good luck

Have managed to get temp down to mid 37 degrees now and dd seems a lot happier but as soon as meds start to wear off the temperature starts rising again. Any idea how long it can take for the temperacture to to stop completely when a baby has earache...I understand that it is a self limiting condition but I'm worried about giving her maximum doses of calpol and ibuprofen now 3 days running!

Is she on antibiotics for the infection?

I'd take her back to the GP or phone NHS24 for out of hours appointment.

DD has had a virus (sore throat but ears ok) since saturday and had a temp around 39.5 for 3.5 days before it started to go down (Calpol helped temporarily and then it went up again). For last 4 days it has been about 38 degrees so its going down but very slowly. Also not interested in food. So i think these things can just take time....

yes she's on amoxycillin but although she's had 2 days worth I don't see any improvement. I'm also worried as she's refusing her milk....so far since last night at 7 pm she's had 8 ouncesof milk....although plenty of water,

You should see some improvement after a couple of days, I'd have thought.

Phone the surgery and see what they say.

jakeyscousin · 08/06/2007 15:46

thanks so much. I totally agree so I've phoned the surgery and have an appointment today at 4:40 at least then I can get some reassurance that it is indeed her ears! I'm just so worried about her...seeing her like this is so difficult. I just want to be abel to do something to help her IYKWIM

Better to get it checked out, jakey!

I hope she gets sorted and on the road to recovery soon!
