I'm sorry you're going through this.

My dfil passed from complications arising from kidney failure - although he had been on dialysis for around eighteen months before hand, he (and the doctors) decided eventually to cease it.

My understanding is (due to what we were told at the time) was that even with dialysis, it only replaces around 10-15% of kidney function. As a caveat, we were obviously quite distressed when this was going on so may have misunderstood.

Dialysis can be a very uncomfortable procedure, and it was causing a great deal of distress to my dfil. The doctors believed the dehydration to the brain which arose as a result of it also caused extreme dementia-like symptoms which was very distressing.

I am afraid in the case of dfil, once he stopped the dialysis it was only a week before he passed. We had him in the family home and were all able to be around at that time.

Just to add, there were other factors at play - his immune system. Was very weak and he kept getting infections which I suspect will have meant he passed perhaps quicker than otherwise.

He has been given 3 weeks to live. He has come home now
