Can you have steroid injections to the back without sedation or is it

  1. Dangerous
  2. Way too unpleasant

Thank you
Ps. This is because I am going private and it's so expensive for sedation
I've already spent 30k trying to sort out chronic pain

Thank you

Hi, I'm not either.

But my dad had eight lots of steroids injections in his lower back over about 5 years and never had sedation, just local anaesthetic. He had a low pain threshold but always asked for the injections every six months so they can't have been that bad. He never commented on them hurting.

BoreOfWhabylon · 05/09/2018 21:00

I've had lots. They give local anaesthetic first, it's fine.

MissConductUS · 05/09/2018 21:01

If they hit a bone with the needle that can be a bit painful, but nothing you'd need sedation for.

nhssecretary · 05/09/2018 21:04

So why do the NHS sedate

I've had epidural put in nerves and that needs sedation so you are still
I will ask my consultant tomorrow if he can do these without sedation as I am scared of it

The steroids wreak havoc with my periods but I am I'm suffering and want one more chance to try and stay supple myself

I haven't been able to get pregnant

maybe his was for something different to you but my dad was NHS

nhssecretary · 05/09/2018 21:15

Did he have them in his back

OP posts:
Talkativeparrot · 05/09/2018 22:18

Yes, his lower back for spinal stenosis or something similar.

nhssecretary · 05/09/2018 22:25

Mine is up the top
I'll see what my consultant says
I'm fed up of being sedated
And wonder one time if it will be the straw which breaks the donkey back

I have these , no sedation just local anastetic . Sedation is only offered for this anxious about the procedure . I find it uncomfortable but not painful

clumsyduck · 05/09/2018 22:29

Those *

nhssecretary · 06/09/2018 00:31

I think the consultant will let me
I don't know why the NHS didn't let us not be sedated we were like animals on a conveyor belt I used to get so upset asking them not to sedate

I want the steroids between my ribs this time

I didn't have sedation, just a local, I wasn't even offered it. This was last year for lower back steroid injections.

Chocolatedeficitdisorder · 06/09/2018 22:22

I had x-ray guided steroid injections into my shoulders for Adhesive Capsulitis. It was incredibly painful and didn't help at all. I was at the point of crying and shouting 'fucking stop!' when the doctor told me he was just about finished. The Local Anaesthetic didn't seem to do much to dull the pain.

I would take sedation any day.

nhssecretary · 07/09/2018 12:29

Can't have them without sedation as I am having nerve blocks as well whilst the surgeon is there

The sedation actually really burns the hand

The sedation actually really burns the hand

What are they using? Can you ask for propofol?

TheFairyCaravan · 07/09/2018 14:32

I’ve had loads of steroid injections into my back, all on the NHS, and have never once been sedated. I’ve never even been asked if I wanted sedation either.

nhssecretary · 07/09/2018 14:57

They have been using medazolam

Good idea I can ask especially now it's private
They used to just shove it up the vein in the NHS
I think they sedated us to stop us talking to the consultant as we never got to see them!!
They used to knock us out just as he walked in. No joke
