Should I go to A&E?

Hi,
I have just had a GP’s appointment and he suggested that I go to A&E with the following symptoms but I’m not sure it warrants a visit:
I have had these symptoms for over a week now.
My main symptom is:
Intermittent lower abdominal pain across both sides that has ranged from mild to severe.
And also:
A change in frequency of bowl movements (going more often, diarrhoea earlier in the week but mainly normal stools)
Increased wind
Gurgling stomach noises

The visit to the GP was due to a severe attack of the stomach last night. I was in agony. I have had my appendix out so it’s not that. The pain last night was worse than when I had appendicitis.
My stomach pain is currently mild so I feel I can’t go to A&E.
I’ve tried paracetamol but they didn’t touch me. I wanted my GP to refer me to a specialist to do checks, not send me to A&E. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks!

If the GP told you to go to A&E then go

MrsMozart · 30/08/2018 15:13

If your GP said A&E then go.

The speciaists will be in the hospital.

GoodHeavensNoImAChicken · 30/08/2018 15:15

Did the GP know you’ve had your appendix out?

If your gp were to refer you to see a specialist unless you paid privately you wouldn’t see someone for months unless it was a suspected cancer, it which case that would be within two weeks.

The idea of seeing a gp and then referring you instantly to a specialist is impossible unless you go through a&e

PotteringAlong · 30/08/2018 15:15

So you’ve been to see your GP. Your GP has sent you to A&E and you’re asking if you should go? Yes. Yes you should go.

A Medical expert has given you advice. Follow it.

The thingsthat are absolutely true about a GP saying " Go to A&E":
It's necessary
it's where you need to be

Just go.
Now .

What's wrong with the GP suggestion to go to A&E?

SoupDragon · 30/08/2018 15:18

I would have expected a GP to refe you to a hospital clinic TBH.

What do you mean by “suggested”? Did he was “well, you could go to A&E” or “you should go to A&E”

Fairylea · 30/08/2018 15:20

If the gp told you to go to a and e why wouldn’t you go? HmmShock

BrassMonkies · 30/08/2018 15:23

So let me get this straight, you asked a proper doctor to see you, examine you, check your medical history, etc and she/he told you the best thing to do was to go to A&E.

Now you're asking a bunch of randoms online, who haven't even clapped eyes on you, what you should do instead.

Let me think... Hmm

Synecdoche · 30/08/2018 15:23

You will see a specialist a hell of a lot sooner if you go to A&E as advised rather than waiting for an outpatient referral.

premiertav · 30/08/2018 15:41

Why do you think one episode of this over a week warrants a specialist anyway?

ItsLikeRainOnYourWeddingDay · 30/08/2018 15:58

Jesus Christ

Your gp has concerns that warrants immediate medical attention and want you to go to a&e but you'd rather ask a bunch of strangers on the internet their opinion.

Words fail me as to your stupidity. You do realise your gp probably realises there is something serious but didn't want to worry you by telling you?

PerverseConverse · 30/08/2018 21:16

A&E or not, there's no cure for stupid Hmm

swingofthings · 31/08/2018 07:19

GPs referring to A&E unnecessary is the curse of hospitals because it happens much too often and sadly often as a result of time constraint to carry out more examination themselves so OP's question is not so stupid.

Did you ask the gp why he thought you needed to go though?

Kaylasmum49 · 31/08/2018 12:24

Wow! Don't hold back eh!!! Why do you have to resort to calling people names? The op only asked for some advice and she got totally slated, no need at all.

WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo · 31/08/2018 16:59

Did you go to A&E in the end? I hope that you are OK Flowers
