Has anyone used merina/mirena IUD?

I had baby3 last year and now have painful cramping period pains at least a week before period. Am bloated like a seacow and want to eat everything. Also complete cow to DH.
Doctor suggested using the merina for contraception and this should also sort out moods etc. Not sure whether this is any good especially as I am not able to take the pill as it adversely affected me (pain in legs etc.) Read some hideous reports on the internet - especially one person who gained 60lbs. Love some advice from you knowledgable girls.

there have been threads on here about this before. I use it, I've been okay on it but I was runnning out of options to control v heavy bleeding and contraception! Think you have to try it to see how it suits you, no 2 woman seem to react the same.

Kewcumber · 05/06/2007 22:51

i loved it but if you search the threads you will get various views. TBH I think you have to try it, if it works for you its brilliant. What have you got to lose?

Kewcumber · 05/06/2007 22:52

try this threas for info

wishingchair · 05/06/2007 23:14

I had it fitted 2 weeks ago and so far so good.

I'm on my second! and love it. had it for 5 years and I've got on great with it. added extra bonus - not had a period since, result.

Kewcumber · 06/06/2007 11:13

was the one not enough Furball or were you so enamoured you just had to have a matching pair

DisneyonIce · 06/06/2007 12:26

loads of threads on here - some people have loved it, some have had quite bad experiences on it, especially to do with mood swings. Please search the archives.

NormaStanleyFletcher · 06/06/2007 12:29

I got pregnant with it. DD is now 9 months old

Kewcumber · 06/06/2007 12:34
Shock
Kewcumber · 06/06/2007 12:34

thought it had a very high success rate?

NormaStanleyFletcher · 06/06/2007 12:36

Well the GP, MW and consultant said I was the first they had come across, but the scan man said that he sees loads (though he wouldn't be aware of peoples contraceptive choices if he wasn't being to asked to look for it when he did the scan iyswim)

Kewcumber · 06/06/2007 12:59

am fascinated - did they leave it in through pregnancy or take it out?

NormaStanleyFletcher · 06/06/2007 13:02

Left it there - never found it

NormaStanleyFletcher · 06/06/2007 13:03

But then because my periods had stopped some months earlier (as can happen with merina) I had no effin idea I was pregnant until I started getting bigger (about 18-19 weeks)))))

BishyBarneyBee · 06/06/2007 13:06

do search - there are LOADS of threads on this

BishyBarneyBee · 06/06/2007 13:06

to summarise suits some others find it work of the devil. POt luck which you are and if you are okay with hormones in you.

Sid · 06/06/2007 13:08

Wow, NormaStanleyFletcher. How many kids did you have already and how old were you, if you don't mind my asking?

NormaStanleyFletcher · 06/06/2007 13:12

DD is number 3 and I was 36 when she was born.

DP thinks he has 'ubersperm'

He has now had the snip

bootsmonkey · 06/06/2007 13:43

I have had two Mirena (Mireni?) - one before DD and one after. I loved it, as no periods, but after the hormonal upheaval of pregnancy, it did not love me. I would strongly query your doctor's assertion that it will sort out your moods as I had it removed as it was turning me in to a pyschotic cow. My doctor agreed that mood swings were a common side effect... (However I think I am just a moody cow naturally, exacerbated by fake hormones). It also killed my libido stone dead. Returned a week after having it removed, although took a bit longer to rememeber what to do about it . I think the only way to know would be to try it and see... Good luck!
