Just wondering really.

Could you catch one through talking to someone who had the bug or only if you come into contact with it through touch etc.

My manager made me do a welfare visit today on one of my team who is off with sickness and diariah bug. I didnt want to do it as were off on hols on Tuesday and didnt want to come in to contact with the bug just in case were all ill while were away.

Whats the likelyhood of me catching it??

They are not airborne, however you don't need direct contact to catch them.
Toilet -> unwashed hands -> doorhandle -> hand -> mouth is enough.

Washing your hands and keeping them away from your mouth is a good start.

winniepoo · 05/06/2007 20:54

They can be airboure that's why it's a good idea to keep toilet lids down

Hmm

some airbourne viruses cause sickness. Most are passed hand to mouth though. wash your hands.

kbaby · 05/06/2007 22:40

Well lets hope I dont get it then. I washed my hands as soon as I got back but still had to drive the car first etc and cant see me disenfecting everything I touched in the car/handbag/hair etc.

Another odd question which has bugged me for ages. Why do you have to wash your hands when you go to the loo. I mean its not as if your wiping with your hand. Surely putting your hands in your mouth and not washing them would be worse

But if someone has conaminated their hand before you - and then flushed the chain - you flush the chain - pick up their excrement [urggh]...need I say more?

tortoise · 05/06/2007 22:45

I saw on a childrens prog once that germs from poo can pass through 10 sheets of loo roll .
I had wondered the other day about hand washing because by the time the loo is flushed and knicks and jeans pulled up and belt done up the germs are already spread everywhere!

Some stomach bugs can live on dry surfaces for up to a week and on wet surfaces for up to 2 months! So if a little (or big) person forgets to wash their hands after the toilet, then handles something afterwards, that thing can be 'contaminated' for quite some time.

The only solution is to live in surgical gloves with a goldfish bowl on your head.

Questions like that scare me

(about why do we wash our hands I mean!)

I'm always paranoid about using public loos, better if the sink is in the cubicle, then you can wash your hands before even doing up your jeans etc.

Otherwise just touch the minimum of stuff and wash hands after. (If sink is in there, I always open the door holding loo roll in my hand, I don't want to touch handle after washing!)

Ok so I'm a trifle obsessive...

eeek, yeh I get bugged about loos too. Hate opening door with hand and flushing loo etc, thats why I like self flushing ones and taps that run when you put your hands under.

My daughter-in-law and 2 grandkids have been to the beach recently , they paddled in the sea, but didn’t swim because of the latest sewage reports going into our waters! The 3 of them have been ill with sickness! But me, my husband and son who are in the same house are fine! Can it be from the beach?

OP even if you don't get it, please just do it. Otherwise you will be spreading all kinds of awful things around.

i'm also scared that someone has to ask this!
