MRI Scan for back

I have to have an MRI scan and having had one before, I am dreading it. Any tips on how to get through it-will be in there for 30 minutes? I get very claustrophobic.

I am also terrified about what they will find wrong with my back. I have had surgery before for a herniated disc and doctor thinks I have a second disc problem (numb foot, tingling arms and legs, back pain). What can I do to avoid surgery for a 2nd time?

Dear goldenlilliesanddaffodillies,

I am the radiology manager at Medserena Upright MRI Centre in South Kensington, London.
We operate an Open Upright scanner, who is designed to help claustrophobic patients. If you were to have the scan at our centre you will be sitting down and there is nothing in front of you. You will be able to watch a DVD during the scan.
Please have a look at our website: www.trulyopenmri.com. so you can see for yourself.
Let me know how you get on.

Thank you. Fortunately I managed it and it was fine as I went in feet first and shut my eyes! It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be in the end.

I'm glad you managed it.
