Sudden blurry vision

IamAporcupine · 19/08/2018 12:10

Just came back from holiday and noticed that my vision is really blurry.
I wear long and short distance glasses but was always able to read a letter/paper without glasses too.

Yesterday I picked up something with a small letter and could not read it. And just now I've noticed that I can just about read my whatsup messages. I mean I can but they are noticeable blurry.

Can this wait until tomorrow or should I go to A&E?!
I have no other symptoms

I'd go to the opticians, personally.

intuition · 19/08/2018 12:33

Why would you go to A&E? It's not an emergency. You noticed it yesterday, today is Sunday. Surely an optician tomorrow is perfectly adequate.

Frosty6611 · 19/08/2018 12:36

If it’s your only symptom then I wouldn’t worry and would just get yourself to an optician next week as you may need a stronger prescription.

It’s only likely to be something more sinister if you are having other weird symptoms too and feel generally unwell

Spudina · 19/08/2018 12:38

You need this looking at today but I would start with Opticians, if you aren't having other symptoms like headaches. They will refer you on if they pick up something that needs addressing. Eye problems can be an indicator of lots of health problems. They might send you to ENT or other hospital department.

Spudina · 19/08/2018 12:56

I just booked myself my very overdue eye test at 2pm today after your thread reminded me. Lots of places open today.

IamAporcupine · 19/08/2018 13:04

Thanks everyone - sorry I should have been more specific, when I said A&E I meant the Eye Emergency Department!

@Frosty6611 I might need a stronger prescription, but the sudden change is what worries me.

Thanks Spudina - you mean Specsavers type Optician?

I actually do have one other very odd symptom - nipple pain Confused And I feel slightly dizzy

OP posts:
memaymamo · 19/08/2018 13:06

Is it possible to call and ask? Not sure how these things work..

Also could you be pregnant? Would explain the nipple pain.

Balancingact12 · 19/08/2018 13:07

Don’t want to automatically go to worse case scenario but just back from holiday.. =possibly long flight? So you could be at a higher risk for a blood clot, blurred vision, feeling off balance/dizzy can also be symptoms of this more dangerous problem

IamAporcupine · 19/08/2018 13:11

@memaymamo - I did think about it, but, no it is not possible (unless the bleeding I had before going on holiday was something else!).
I could try calling.

@Balancingact12 - it was only a 2 1/2 hr flight, but yes, I see your point.

mintich · 19/08/2018 13:12

Is your long distance vision also blurry or just for reading?

IamAporcupine · 19/08/2018 13:18

@mintich - long distance seems fine. Is the short reading distance that is really bad.

OP posts:
innkeeper · 19/08/2018 13:25

Put your reading glasses on and hold print further away. Is it clear now?

IamAporcupine · 19/08/2018 13:31

@innkeeper - yes, it is clearer but only after I move the print an arm-length away.

OP posts:
innkeeper · 19/08/2018 13:32

Sounds like you just need stronger reading specs.

IamAporcupine · 19/08/2018 13:38

@innkeeper - but that seem to have happened over a couple of days?!

OP posts:
innkeeper · 19/08/2018 13:41

Optometrist here. It can happen like that. It's the most likely option. Update us after your appointment

Quartz2208 · 19/08/2018 13:44

It is constantly blurry or just that you lose focus every now and then

Constant blurriness and dizziness is not a change in prescription required that is eye department it could potentially be a stroke

user1471462115 · 19/08/2018 13:45

And blurred vision is one of the symptoms of high blood sugars, so go and get this tested in chemists. Most will do a random test for you.

IamAporcupine · 19/08/2018 13:54

@innkeeper - thanks I will update

@Quartz2208 - I'd say it is constant? Like now that I am typing it feels 'odd' somehow. I feel slightly lethargic too.

oh shit now you are scaring me!

Sudden constant blurry vision should be looked at by a professional and it should be done today

Its exactly the thing the emergency eye care clinic was set up to do.

tribpot · 19/08/2018 14:01

I've got many of the same symptoms, IamAporcupine - although very pronounced vertigo/dizziness (no nipple pain, though ... )

I went to the optician's this morning to have my eyes tested and rule them out at the cause of the vertigo. My blurry vision was put down to Blepharitis. I'm having a hearing test with them in the week to see if that uncovers anything and then will go to the GP if no improvement.

My dizziness started after I was on a boat during a holiday with a lot of travelling - very bizarre as we were only on board for 17 hours or so, not like a cruise or anything. I had had the blurred vision before this.

Hope you get some answers soon.

justcontemplatingsomething · 19/08/2018 14:01

I'd do a pregnancy test. Blurry vision was one of my early symptoms in pregnancy......

IamAporcupine · 19/08/2018 14:24

@Quartz2208 - so not the Optometrist you reckon?
