having my wisdom teeth out tomorrow - tell me tp pull my self together!!!!

I have posted about this before, but tomorow is D-day. I have to go into hospital tomorrow to have them out, under general anastetic(sp?)

I have got myself into a right state, so much so i was actually sick before! I am having my two bottom ones out, and there is a possibility of complications as the nerve is wrapped around one of the roots of the tooth, which could cause permanant numbness.

So what i need is some nice people who have had them out to tell me how much of a doddle it is. Also i am worried about being put to sleep as i have never had an operation before. If anyone could go through what that is like, so i can get my mind ready for it, that would be great.
I just keep thinking to myself 'pull yourself together woman!!!' if anyone wants to say that, that would be great too!

I had 3 of mine out at the same time and like you it was also my first ever operation. Apart from feeling very sick afterwards due to the anethesetic (sp?) it was fine. I worried myself silly too - but as it turned out for nothing.

Is someone going with you to make sure you get home OK?

My DH is taking me and then picking me up later when it is all over. He isn't allowed to stay with me, he has to ring after six hours to see if i am ok to come home.

I had all four out in April under IV anaesthetic. Doddle indeed. They gave me some great painkillers to take home and I used them for 24 hours (probably would have used them for another 24 hours if I hadn't been keen to get back to BFing my DD). Make sure you have lots of yoghurt/rice pudding/ jelly/ eggs to scramble etc. in stock to munch on whilst you're recovering. Also, I found my dd's nasal aspirator invaluable for rinsing out the sockets (gross I know!), it really helped dislodge any debris once I was back on normal food (about 5 days). Also, get some super strength over the counter pain killers - check you can bf on them if this is relevant to you. It was my first time being put to sleep too & I was worried as heck beforehand. It's great! I wasn't even aware of feeling sleepy....one minute I was looking at my oral surgeon and the next I was waking up. Very odd feeling though - I had no idea I'd been 'out' for nearly an hour. Can your DH go in with you - they wouldn't let mine and I wish they had - the nurse wasn't quite as reassuring for those last 30 seconds...

hi. i had 4 out at the same time. i thought i was going to look like a hamster by the time they had finished but it was ok. I little sore. I would get some straws in to drink through though. Its a lot easier. I had a little bruising but it wasnt anywhere near as bad as i thought it would be. Good luck. You will be fine.

Gosh - you obviously get better care on the NHS!! My op was under my US health insurance and I had to go home about 20 mins after the op......I remember standing in the lift feeling very dazed! I'm sure they'll give you some painkillers which will help you sleep in the hospital.

Like Bellie, I had 3 out (the 4th never appeared). Felt lousy coming round - can't remember if I was actually sick - does everybody feel like death after a GA? And my gums were quite sore - mind you this was over 30 years ago so memories are dim. I remember feeling pretty miserable for the rest of the day (similar timescale to yours) but it was much better next day.

They will be v v careful with the nerve. I had to have a GA for the removal of a cyst on my jaw which was very close to the parotid nerve, could have had it popped out under a local otherwise, I was warned that there was a risk of facial paralysis but obviously they prefer to avoid those problems if it's humanly possible.

No they wont let DH come with me. Good job really, i don't think i will be in a chatty mood (for once!)
Also, there is somewhere i REALLY want to go on the Friday evening, so that will be just over 24 hrs after. Do you think i will be up to it?

btw I've never had a problem with the going to sleep - one minute you're there and the next you're waking up, as mit said - there's no big "OMG I'm going!" cos you've gone!

How you feel on Friday will depend to an extent on how much digging out they've had to do I think. Also if you are taking strong painkillers you probably shouldn't drink with them. So be prepared not to want to go when it comes round.

you nay not be up to it. i felt shattered for a few days after and the painkillers they will give you may make you feel grotty

How are you? I know they will be very carefull with the nerve. I am going to a different hospital than most go to to have them out. The surgeon is a specialist so i know i will be in the best hands.

Some more 'doddle' stories here. I had two of mine out many years ago at the dentist's surgery - no GA, just an armful of Valium. It was great - no swelling, and I was eating toast that same evening. My friend has hers out a few weeks ago in hospital and had a good experience too. All the best for tomorrow xx

I had two out under a local in the dentists chair......it was like shelling peas, over in seconds. I had the other two out under a general and its nothing to worry about. Put it this way, its a lot less painful than giving birth, plus everyone fusses over you and you get lots of sleep, flowers, get well cards. Is this making it more appealing?

Not the same but I had a benign parotid tumour removed a few years ago with the same nerve risks as the nerve was wrapped round. My face is extra tickly on the jaw/cheek right next to the ear but that's all. Was numb for a few months but no problems with paralysis.

I had all of mine removed quite some years ago and the pain wasn't as bad as i thought it would be afterwards but and a big BUT do be prepared for some bruising....my dh got some funny looks for quite some weeks afterwards. I had a general which i was pleased about as i'd have hated to have them out by way of a local anaesthetic and it is just like being really really tired and able to simply sleep..quite relaxing in a way as you go into a dazy dreamy state just before it kicks in and when you wake up i found it like coming around from a really deep sleep. Hi everyone,

I am back after my op, and feeling very well actually!! It wasn't as bad as i thought it would be glad to say. My mouth is a little sore and swollen, but after taking the pain killers i was given i am feeling much more comfortable.
I have been sooooo hungry i have just eaten a sheppards pie ready meal, yummy!
I hope that it is ok to eat it, as i wont be able to use my mouth wash until tomorrow - ah well, too late now anyway!!!
Anyway just wanted to thank you all for your support, you are all wonderfull!
