Go back to GP again - a cough that hangs around can be asthma or could be an infection that can be sorted out with antibiotic. (Ds is on anti-bs atm for similar reasons.)

Try raising one end of his cot/bed (put some phone books under the legs) or making the room all steamy (boil a kettle but keep the lid off).

i know you can give the full dose of calpol and nurofen at the same time, but that's for temperature. i put menthol crystals in a bowl of hot water somewhere out of reach. i raise their mattress with towels underneath. i would go back to the gp about the asthma thing. i ring late opening chemists if i'm unsure about what medicines i can give together. lots of warm drinks to relax throat - hot dilute apple juice or whatever. i know reducing dairy products can often help mucas heavy colds as dairy produces mucas.
