Five week period

I haven't had a period since December 2017, previously they were generally regular but miss the odd month here and there. Then suddenly came on 5 weeks ago, really heavy and with massive clots. It stopped after around 8 days, and then 2 days after it came back really heavy and clotty, flooding a super tampon in under an hour, having to use two pads to stop it spoiling my clothes. It hasn't stopped since. I'm not in any pain, but I'm embarrassed to leave the house to see the GP because it's just relentless, scared of leaking onto my clothes or the chairs etc, and I'm ashamed because I'm very overweight and always made to feel embarrassed there so I've just been taking iron tablets and praying it will go away but its now coming to six weeks and I'm scared. The blood isn't really like period blood now it's more like the consistency of a nose bleed. Defo not pregnant as my partner is infertile. Has anyone experienced this?

I have had the same experience multiple times in the past, my longest period was 6 months with sporadic days off here and there, but no real break. I was changing maxi pads and tampons every hour, and had to take a change of clothes with me everywhere I went.
I tried multiple birth control pills and hormones to try stop the bleeding, but none of them worked. The only one contraceptive option that worked for me was the mirena coil. Insertion is not pleasant at all, but after 2 days my bleeding had reduced to spotting, all I had was a few cramps.
Another option is norethisterone, which is a progesterone-based tablet I took 3 times a day which stopped my bleeding in just over a day.
Have you considered calling your doctor and having an over-the-phone consultation to avoid having to go to the surgery?

Our surgery doesn't tend to do phone consults they always insist on going in and blood tests for everything. I'm scared of needles too. I'm absolutely useless I don't even know how I'm still alive.

I am having this problem as we speak. Been 3 weeks so far on and off.

I looked into it last year - I am also overweight and was told it is most likely the cause - and advised to get the Mirena coil fitted. I didn't and I'm back here again.

Basically my body isn't making progesterone. Norethisterone tablets should stop the bleeding as a temporary measure. Or at least slow it right down.

I too need to return to my gp next week and have them tell me I need to lose weight and then apparently I won't have any problems with anything...Confused

It's scary I know but get it over with, and don't suffer any more.

If they are safe for you, you can try one ibuprofen tablet every 4-6 hours too

sadsac1 · 21/07/2018 13:01

If you push for a telephone appointment I'm sure they may give you one. 💐

sadsac1 · 21/07/2018 14:10

@Charliiquinn were you ever given a reason why this was happening?

JZA80 · 21/07/2018 15:33

I'll give it a try on the phone thing on Monday. If not I'll just have to sit tight and wait Sad

@Sadsac I was told I have a hormonal imbalance in that my
body produces too much estrogen in comparison to progesterone

sadsac1 · 23/07/2018 12:51

@JZA80 did you manage to get a phone appointment?

jza80 · 23/07/2018 12:58

I called in this morning, but they are only offering telephone appointments to people who are "seriously unable" to get there. So I asked for a regular appointment to be told that the day is full and only the nurse was available.

The only way to get an appointment is to ring up and scramble for them at 8am. I'm starting to feel a bit ill now can't describe it just washed out, so I will definitely call in again first thing. The bleeding hasn't abated at all over the weekend. Sad

Good luck let me know what they say.

Panicking about things that didn't happen. Feel a bit silly now Blush the GP was lovely and didn't call me fat, she gave me Utovlan (norithistone?) and says it should stop the bleeding but if not to go back and see what else she can do. Think the ill washy feeling was mainly due to me being stupid because it's gone now! Thanks for asking about me :)
